KGYM Radio said Cordell Pemsl commits

I was thinking Gatens committed when he was in 8th grade. I think Bruener committed pretty early (around the same time as Horner I think) too.

Brunner didnt verbal as early as Horner. IIRC, Brunner actually took a visit to Minnesota before he verballed to Iowa. I want to say Brunner was a junior when he committed.

The earliest verbals for Iowa basketball that come to mind for me are Gatens, Horner, Oliver, Davis and now Pemsl.

He's a Hawk fan and he's close to Mom. Something very strange happens if we lose him.

This coupled with the fact that his late Grandma was a big Hawk fan and it was always her dream for Cordell to wear the Black and Gold makes his verbal about as rock solid as you can get for a player that wont sign for another year and a half.

Watched some of his videos. This kid looks like he could play forward at iowa next year with his mass at 6'7". He has a decent outside shot. Pretty athletic. I saw that he is projected to be 6'10-6'11". Looked pretty comfortable dribbling the length of the floor for a dunk. Very excited to see this kid grow into his game.

He said on twitter that he chose iowa for his (late) grandma. She was a huge iowa fan, and he grew up a diehard hawk.

Sorta reminds me of that kid we had 4-5 years ago that transferred to U.S.C. Can't remember his name now. Pemsl shots come out low-like from his chin or so-so that could lead to some issues but overall, it's a good get for Fran.

Nice. I'd still like to see Fran get some work done on players that either A) Don't commit really early before everyone else gets involved and/or B) already grew up Hawk fans, but sounds like Pemsl has a lot of skills so I like this one. Even though I think out-of-state recruiting is critical, it's still just as crucial to snag the top in-state recruits, and Fran is doing a pretty good job in this department.

I think grabbing top 150 instate kids should help bring in out of state kids that are at that level. I don't think Woody and Gessell were able to do that because it was too early in the game. Hopefully this helps with out of state kids that want to play with other "elite" prospects. Like you said, have to get the instate kids when they are there, but when there aren't any (2014 and 2015) you have to be able to compete for the good ones out of state. I think it will happen for Fran, I just don't think kids are that trusting of Iowa yet. A good run next year would certainly help.
