KF Says a Couple Iowa Juniors Might Have Thinking to Do

Josh Jackson still is deciding on his future. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said he might have a few juniors with things to think about:

If Daniels is big enough I doubt there's really any reason to stay. O-lineman put a ridiculous amount of wear on their bodies and an ACL or Achilles could be the end of it. Look at Ott and Boettger. Their injuries potentially cost them millions of dollars over the long haul. Ott's driving truck now, and even if he didn't stick in the NFL he'd likely have several hundred thousand dollars to start out life in the real world.

30 years ago it might have been a different story, but with the size of NFL contracts right now I think I'd tell my own kid to get that money while you can and get out. Jackson graduated already so that is a total no-brainer.

I'm glad KF is being more open about this stuff and acknowledging it as well. It sure doesn't hurt in recruiting when you have guys considering leaving early.

Daniels has been dinged up quite a bit in college. I think that could play into it but I think he ultimately comes back. I think Jackson goes.

Not to rag on Daniels, but am I alone in thinking he took a (minor) step back this season? It seemed like he and Stanley weren't always on the same page when it came to pass pro and when to snap the ball, as well as sometimes getting taken advantage of by LB's crossing on a blitz, but it could just be me.

Also, I agree Kirk has sometimes slighted guys publicly, and unfairly, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was honest with them behind closed doors. It seems almost every former Hawk still praises the program and wants to be involved, even if it's just repping them on social media, and that has to reflect on their relationship with the staff.

The only way to get to the 'Big money' in the NFL is to get your clock started and be playing well when you get to your contract year. Which depending on what round your drafted is either yr 4 or 5 if team has option I believe. You can't speed up or slow down time. Football is so brutal that the sooner you start that clock and cashing checks the better. Once somebody says your qualified enough and offers you a gig you'd be crazy to not take it. Education isn't going anywhere.

My thinking as well.

I honestly don't think that Daniels is ready. Watching his play objectively without Hawkeye glasses, he still has a ways to go. He tends to play high and struggles to keep his base square. He also could use more core strength - he gets bull rushed and loses pad level.

What he does have is very good athleticism for his size. There's a lot to work with and his ceiling is high, but he would benefit from another year. Unlike King, he almost certainly would up his draft stock.

He had some rough games. Some of it had to do with young parts around him. Some had to do with injury. He was dinged up most of the year. He played really well against Ohio State and Nebraska.

I trust they will both get solid advice from the people around them. I wish them both the best, regardless of their decisions. Just remember: NFL does NOT stand for National Football League. It stands for "Not for Long."

These often aren't easy decisions. You only get so much info from the NFL people. They don't want to show too much of their hands most times.
