From what I recall and know from those inside the athletic department, Hayden would have absolutely lost his shit if the next coach hadn't had Hawkeye connections. There was a certain amount of deference to Hayden when selecting who Bowlsby and the committee would interview.
Bowlsby had wanted Terry Allen for a couple years, but by then Allen had gone to Kansas and struggled. If Fry had retired a bit earlier, when Allen was still at UNI and winning big, Bowlsby would likely have tried hiring him. Although I'm not quite sure how Bowlsby would have planned to navigate that with Hayden.
Iowa did interview Chuck Long and Donny Patterson, but I think that was primarily a favor to Hayden.
In a lot of ways, Iowa got very, very lucky with Ferentz. After Bowlsby turned Stoops off and he jumped for Oklahoma, there really weren't any other qualified candidates with Hawkeye connections in the mix. If Ferentz hadn't been so impressive to the committee (and well thought of within NFL circles, even if very, very under the radar), I wonder if Bowlsby would have had to restart the search process and break it to Hayden that the next coach might not have Hawkeye ties? Kirk ended up being a bit of a last second swing at an off speed pitch you didn't see coming but end up hitting over the fence.
My guess is Goetz will have all options at her disposal. Internal candidates, but also those without previous ties. Kirk won't have the same influence that Hayden did.

I agree completely, but we need some context here.
Speculating on whether or not Kirk hangs it up after this season doesn't necessarily imply that it is the hope.
I posted a thread several weeks ago that my gut feeling is that this season is Kirk's last, not because I'm hoping for it, but it's just a feeling. I sense that he is growing weary of the changing landscape, with conference expansion, NIL, etc. Much of that is anathema to his ideals.
I don't think Kirk relishes the idea of managing what is becoming a semi-pro league to finish out his career.
That said, if he decides to keep going, I won't be disappointed, just a little surprised.

I think he'll do it in a way that draws the least attention to himself. That said I'd like to see him announce it before his last game so that he can go out to the ovation he deserves.

You must not watch any of his interviews or his call-in show with Dolph. He in no way sounds or looks like he's ready to retire. I'd give it 3-4 more years before he starts actually thinking about it.

Agree. It wasn't really about whether or not he retires, but more about the people in the fanbase that can't wait for him to retire so we can get someone "better". Having said that, he's not going to retire this year.
I don't see him retiring anytime until AT LEAST January of 2027. Finishing out the contract is not off the table.
It looks like good things are happening with the team, even if they lose 2 more. Assuming, they're entertaining games.
I'll say what I've said before, I hope if he quits before his contract is up, that it's HIS decision and nobody is forced. If he is forced, I hope he agrees to make it look like it was his decision. And that he and Goetz at least appear to work together after the decision is made. Whether they actually do or not. Ideally, I think they should actually work together. Input from Ferentz, but it's Goetz' decision. I hope she's legitimately considers any input he has to offer.

KF seems to REALLY enjoy this team. It's built strong from the O Line and D Line out, which is his kind of team. And, everyone buys into his team-first attitude and they don't get themselves into trouble off the field, for the most part. Good people. And he has said how much he enjoys coaching. I don't think he hangs it up after this year. But you never know.

Think about that for a minute. What else is he supposed to say? Any smart, experienced coach knows how important it is to not show his hand during a season. That would have major ramifications, particularly with recruiting and maintaining the current roster. Parents would be on the phone in a heartbeat.
That said, it's just a gut feeling that he may see the writing on the wall in terms of the massive changes to the college football landscape and decide it's not for him. If not, I'm perfectly fine with him staying. He's earned that right and then some.

It is hard to appreciate consistency and stability until it is gone. While Iowa may have come up short of expectations some seasons, they have won fewer than 8 games only 2x in the last 17 years. In that same stretch, they have hit double-digit victories 5x.
Bottom line, the highs have not been as high as many would have liked. In the last 10 years, Wisconsin and MSU have reached higher highs, even though on balance, Iowa has been better.
And from an emotional level, I think there are 2 things that many fans have a hard time getting past...
First, in the early 2010s, OSU was on probation, and Michigan and PSU were relatively down. Iowa did not capitalize during that window (6.8 wins from 2010-2014), and Wisconsin and MSU did (10.0 and 10.6 wins, respectively). That was just bad timing for the KF era to enter a valley.
Second, the BF as OC experiment. Iowa's D and ST have been historically elite over the past 10 years, and we underachieved throughout much of that stretch due to BF. We still averaged 9.2 wins/season over that stretch, but with a competent offense, I gotta think that edges up to at least double-digits, and perhaps we can give Mich a legit run in some of those championship games.
