KF presser tomorrow?

Q: [inaudible]

COACH FERENTZ: I think everyone has a chance to play. Both guys are competing, which is a good thing. Certainly, we needed to score more points, obviously. And that's what were working on this week. I think you have to go back and look at a guy like Sam Brownlee. We had some injuries that year, and he got his chance obviously. Both guys are giving good effort.

Q: How was Maryland able to run the ball so well?

COACH FERENTZ: Well first off, hats off to Maryland for executing well. They really blocked well on a couple of those long plays. Certianly we need to tackle better. We had a couple bad angles, and a couple misse

d assignements. Obviously, we have to get better.

Q: Did you consider going to CJ at any point in the game?

COACH FERRENTZ: It didn't cross my mind. I mean, both guys are good quarterbacks and I am comfortable with either one. The thing with Jake is that he's a med student. He's studying Organic Chemistry if that tells you anything. And CJ is also competing. CJ gives us a bit of a different look. But Jake was our quarterback and he showed, I think, that when we were able to get something going in the 4th quarter. Obviously, we have to score more points.

Halfway through this one I forgot I wasn't actually reading his presser. Good job on the "inaudible". Made me laugh out loud.

There are some that certainly need some more certainlies. Or is it certainlys? I certainly can't spell fake words for ****.

Reporter: Kirk what are you doing during the bye week?

Kirk: Mary told me the garage is a mess so we certainly have to clean some things up there.

Q. How do you feel about getting the onside kick there?

COACH FERENTZ: I had to make sure that was us and not them. I had to do a double take. About time we have that work in our favor. Hillyer made a great play on the ball and gave us chance to keep going. Certainly would have liked to get the 2nd one though

Q. On the last drive of the game it looks like Jake looked over to the sideline and 16 seconds ran off the clock.......

COACH FERENTZ: We got off to a good start there. Moved the ball and kind of sputtered. You are in a situation there where you got to move the ball down the field. Jake has been in this situation before, not quite exactly, but is looking to do the things necessary in that type of situation. This is what we would expect out of him in these spots. I'm sure Jake could see they were dropping 8 or 9 into coverage and that makes things challenging. We would like to be a little more fluid and certainly we needed the touchdown there to go to overtime. But, you got to keep moving the ball down field and you have to make sure you have the right type of situation covered to get the ball moving down there.

Q. Smith and Bullock get tangled up on the last pass incompletion. What was going on there?

COACH FERENTZ: Again you are moving the ball down the field and you got two guys trying to make a play on the ball. That is what we want them to do and we just have to execute better. If you are going there then I have to be going here. That type of thing. And spacing is important to. Just another thing we will take a look at and try to improve upon with our underneath stuff.

Q. Any worries about the moral of this team right now?

COACH FERENTZ: Not at all. Not all. This is a hardworking bunch of players and they will bounce back. We just have to clean some things up on both sides of the ball and I like our chances moving forward.

Q: Coach, going into your third year with Coach Davis as your offensive coordinator, why isn't the offense more productive.

COACH FERENTZ: Well, we did score thirty-one points. It's not like that's just a dog crap team on the field out there. Greg was a guy we brought in. We're lucky to have him. He's a fantastic coach and a fantastic teacher, certainly. When you look at his time at Texas and the things he was able to to there, I think it's an honor to have him here. Obviously, last week we scored thirty-one points and needed eight more. But a lot of that comes down to execution. We have to score points. I don't think you have to know Organic Chemistry to know that. I think when you look at the 1975 Pitt team, you can see some resemblance there maybe. Those guys didn't end up scoring many points, but they gave good effort, and executed very well and the rest is history. I think we have to get there, and that's what we will be working on as we move forward to Northwestern.

Q: Several of your players have admitted they've had bad games and should have been benched. Do you agree?

Coach Ferentz: No. How's that for an answer? No. Because you have to look at the situation, and in the end its all about feel. Take a guy like John Lowdermilk. He's still a young guy. He's been starting for a couple seasons now, but to me he is still a young guy who needs to step up. He's a great kid. Smart. But he needs to keep getting better.

Q: Looking ahead at Northwestern, what do you think of Jackson?

COACH FERENTZ: I think he is going to be tough. I think you can go back and look at a guy like Garrett Wolfe there's some obvious similarities. But we certainly have to do a good job of executing in space.

HaydenHawk is killing it. Seriously looks like he has cut, pasted, and re-edited actual Ferentz statements.
Maybe he doesn't have to do that. Maybe the simpler answer is the answer.

Maybe HH is KF.

LOL HH.

Q: did you consider playing golden Jesus when jakey was clearly struggling? You know, with the happy feet back there.

A: well the thing about cj is that Jakes a real good qb. Great qualities back there. Done some real good things. Consistent. Good approach and stuff. Does all he right things. The type of kid you'd like to have marry one of my daughters that it's married. You know. Snort

Great stuff above...just awesome.

No surprise...KFz's press conferences are just like his offense. Bland and predictable.

Q: coach, it seemed like you could establish the run against Maryland the other day. Coming Into the game as well that's where most people thought Maryland was weak as well. When you completely abandoned the run on Saturday was that your way of staying one step ahead of the opponent, out foxing them that is? Some sort of mind trick or reverse psychology?

Coach: well, I don't know about all that. We don't really do, well, you know, a lot of that stuff. We leave a lot of that, you know, gamesmanship stuff for the outsiders. There's just you know, a lot more to it than that, a little more complicated. We thought the run could be there but you gotta get those out passes going too. Gotta play a full football game, gotta do different things. Different aspects to it all. Their a real good team. Obviously you gotta execute, take advantage of opportunities.

Q: coach, can you repeat that none of us were listening.

Coach: **** this I'm leaving. Let's go derp. Apparently we aren't appreciated here.

Q: You said right after the game that CJ was nicked up, what did you mean?

A: I don't recall anything about that, in 1981, Pete Gales had a sprained ring finger on his left hand so he had to miss 3 days of practice before the Northwestern game, but he was able to come in that game and play. He had a little trouble handing the ball off to Phil Blatcher on the counter play, but otherwise he seemed to be able to get through the game. Tough kid.

Q: 37 pass plays in the 4th Quarter, only down 10. Why abandon the run?

A: Was that what it was? 37? I'm glad you guys are keeping track of that stuff.

Q: Bye week this week, any chance CJ gets healthy and we see him in the Northwestern game?

A: CJ is a little nicked up . . .

Q: Wait, I thought you just said you don't recall anything about that?

A: We have a lot of respect for Northwestern. Get back to the fundamentals. Really, you know, it's a simple game, it's about execution. Compete. Work hard. Execution. Great fans. Organic chemistry. Execution. Kinnick Stadium. Execution.

Q: How do you explain the play call for the last play of the game?

KF: I don't remember right off the top of my head. We will have to check the tape to see where the break down was.

Q: Previously you stated that you have two really good quarterbacks and that you would go with whoever had the hot hand. Do you feel like Jake had the hot hand today?

KF: Well, Jake is who I felt gave us the best chance to win. I think you have to credit Maryland's game plan today. They really took away our receiver's and Jake did a good job of not turning it over until that pick 6. I think he bounced back from it well though and he really gave a great effort towards the end of the game.

Q: Why did we turtle up? Why did we not throw to tight ends? Where was the play action rollout? Where was the long ball that isn't launched like a javelin without enough under it?

KF: Well if it underminds my original plan and it has worked in the past it shows that I was wrong I would rather keep trying to do my plan until its done correctly. We just didn't execute today and we missed some tackles. If you can't tackle you can't win a game.
