KF needs to donate his entire salary to the university.

A lot of folks here need to:
1. Step away from the ledge and think about why you let the results of a football game determine your level of happiness and sanity.
2. Get some perspective and realize that the price of your seat at Kinnick or the amount you pay Mediacom to get the BTN doesn't give you squat in terms of decision-making power. If you stopped going to games, some other person would happily buy your tickets. When you start donating millions of actual dollars (not vcash) to the university, then maybe you can wear the big-boy pants and make big-boy decisions. Until then, you just look like just an unhinged drooling maniac who is to be politely avoided at all costs.
 
I think alot of it is on the coaches. Look at who's our best tailback and where would he be if not for injuries? Maybe our best QB is on the bench, who knows? We will never know because I feel the coaching staff is not a fair opportunity committee. KF has always been like this , look at the JC years. Specially last night, jvb had nothing to gain in the 4th qtr, would have been nice to see someone else to get a chance. put most of it on the coaches.
 
Why is it that only in sports do we expect coaches to "give their money" back when they don't meet expectations or under perform. I thought I was the only one that gave my paycheck back after having a bad day at the office. Seriously who really thinks like this.

Understand to want him replaced, but to expect or even think that he should give back his salary due to under preforming is a joke.

It's probably these same college kids that underperform at some restaurant and expect a big tip or the flip side they are college kids whose daddy is a doctor and has been bought everything they've ever wanted their whole life.

"I want a B1G championship and I want it now! And if I don't get it now I'm a victim because having a great football team while I'm a student is all what the college experience is all about -- and it's all about meeeeeee!"
 
Salary is irrelevant in and of itself, although it certainly should raise performance expectations. I don't think expectations within the program are the problem, however. Before this season, Kirk wanted to get to 1-0. Now, he wants to get to 5-3. I guarantee it. Last night the team didn't meet Kirk's expectations or their own, and that is true whether he is raking in $4M/yr or $300K/yr.

As for the seats and ticket prices, a somewhat out-of-place invocation of the economic concept of elasticity comes into play. If ticket demand was highly elastic relative to performance, then the next home game would have substantially less attendance. However, because many or most people (rightfully) go to games for more than the opportunity to see perfectly-played football, ticket demand right now is highly inelastic to performance. In essence, you'll need to see the program become so hopeless and devoid of entertainment that both current attendees and potential/standby attendees will not see $(X) worthwhile to exchange for a chance to go a game.

I was in East Lansing last week, and after having lived in New England the last couple of years and missing every game at Kinnick since 2010 Ohio State, I'll be at the Nebraska game Thanksgiving week even if the Hawks are 4-7. Fact.

Right, but the complaining would be phrased as "can't we pay for a better coach?" I think we've shown we can pay for the best, but the program seems disjointed right now. It's hard to describe, but even aside from not having exceptional talent, our guys just seem like headless chickens out there sometimes. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we played well at NW because our best games seem to come when the Hawks are in 'back to basics' mode.
 
KF's salary is relevant in two ways:

1. It makes the buyout astronomical, and therefore not feasible (presumably)
2. Even if we could afford to shuck out the $20 million or whatever it is to buyout KF's contract, I presume that would limit what we could spend on the next coach

KF's contract is truly an albatross.

And like it or not - KF's salary WILL be a lightning rod for criticism when we are getting this type of product. Fact of life. And for my money - KF is the most overpaid coach in the Big Ten, if not in the country.

Based on what KF accomplished through 2004, he definitely was NOT overpaid. Even in 2009 I might have felt the same way. But definitely not with the way the past 3 years have gone.

I agree it's totally relevant to economic decisions like whether we could get another coach. I also agree that fan expectations should be higher for a guy making $4M. However, his salary is irrelevant to whether our ugly 4-3 so far this year is acceptable. That's all many people on here are saying. I think almost everyone on here wants the Hawks to be better than they are, but once the salary and buyout is fixed and we're locked-in with Kirk, ugly play becomes no less acceptable than if we had a coach making peanuts.

All it matters toward is the remedy. I totally agree that we've left ourselves without a remedy (saddled ourselves with an albatross, as you say it). If we were playing like this and we had a very low-paid coach, the remedy would be to fire him and pay more for a better coach. I agree it's a problem, but it doesn't make the play we've been seeing any worse.

Agreed 100%. I too would be unhappy with the level of play even if KF was coaching for free. So from that perspective, his salary is completely irrelevant to the way I feel about what we saw on the field last night.

I also realize that KF's salary is where it is mostly because of what he accomplished through 2004. When KF got his big pay raise after the 2004 season, who would have argued it at the time? Surely not me. Unfortunately, things haven't gone nearly as well SINCE then. 2009 was really the lone exception - and Barta got excited and pushed KF's contract way out. That one's squarely on Barta IMO.
 
The issue with the program is so far beyond this game its not even funny. It all starts with the coaches particularly the head coach who is way over paid for the results we get. But regardless of his salary or regardless of the fact that he is a nice guy he simply is not getting the job done.
