Kelton Copeland Says Receivers Still A Work on Progress

I'm willing to cut him some slack. He's young for his grade, not turning 19 until the end of this August, and living halfway across the country. He also experienced some early success last season at ISU and that can give a youngster a false sense of security.

He reminds me of Akrum in that he's immature early in his career here. Let's hope ISM figures it out as well. He's a smart kid and pretty talented.
It's the old adage.....the FB player asks the coach why he's always on his case and should he be worried.

The coach responds....son, when I quit riding you is when you should worry.

i think hawkeyewalker has it right. we all thought B. Smith was a can't miss with loads of talent. ISM was a surprise with his speed. if he can stop dropping the ball he's a legit threat...deep. and if B. Smith can match that, now we're talking. it's supposition right now. but i believe it will be...IF...IF we throw it enough times.
Every year I used to find myself saying these same things. "if only he would stop dropping the ball". "if only he were a better route runner". "If only he had more speed to get separation". And every year I realize if they had those attributes, they'd be 4* prospects and playing somewhere else.

Exactly, what separated MVB as a freshman was his ability to catch the ball. WR need to catch the ball. If you don't got that ability as a freshman, I am not sure it will get any better as a sophomore, juniir or senior.

You can improve your pass catching abilities. Lots of work with the jugs machine. Strengthen your forearms and hands. Polish your technique. It's a lot of hard work on the finer details. It's not going to be fun type of work.

Another issue, especially with speed guys and former track athletes, is that they haven't learned to control their eyes yet. Their bouncing all over the place. There are guys who make it all the way to the NFL and still have trouble with it. It's another problem that can be corrected with practice and repetition. Quick guards sometimes have a similar problem in basketball. They can get to the rim, then lose sight of it and throw up wild unbalanced shots. You see it in high school all the time.

Keep in mind that Smith and Smith-Marsette were true freshman last year. Guys like DJK, McNutt, Hinkel, T. Smith didn't set the world on fire as freshman either.

hey, man, i certainly get that. we've been beaten down to the ground the past 19 years. but i'm just hoping. but yeah, i'm with ya.

I wasn't speaking of anyone in particular. Just the KF era of WRs in general. We've had 3X as many TEs drafted (9) as we have WRs (3), under KF. And 2 of the 3 WRs that were drafted were Hayden's recruits.
That's an embarrassing stat, IMO.

Iowa FB WRs = Iowa BB point guard's

Can't seem to find them. Can't seem to do (sustainingly) well without them.

I assume Tim Dwight was a 4 star guy, if they had those ratings back then. Is that the last 4 star guy we've had at receiver? Really can't remember.

Back in the day we used to call that, "don't sing it, bring it".

I guess McNutt and T. Smith are the better examples of players that made giant leaps as sophomores. I will agree that neither McNutt or T. Smith were impressive as freshman.

But I thought both DJK and Hinkel showed great potential and already showed they could catch the ball as freshman.
