Kelton Copeland Says Receivers Still A Work on Progress

Just can't help it, even though I should know better, I feel like we have significant potential at WR. Only time will tell, but it "feels" like we've recruited better at WR the last couple years.

Still think Smith and ISM can be really good, and Easley a solid safety net.

Off season promise...gets me every year.

If Iowa had 5 WR's with Smith's potential, it would be a safe bet that at least 1 of them would develop into an all conference WR.

But I am not sure Smith is going to put it all together. Sounds like he is a smart guy with the right attitude, so I am rooting for him. But sometimes a lot of things need to go right to tap into that potential.

I'm not sure why he can't be another Marvin McNutt kind of receiver for us. Sounds like he has a good attitude and work ethic and that's more than half the battle there.

I think we'll see progress from the group this fall but '19 might be when things take off. This was pretty much a complete rebuild when Copeland replaced Kennedy.

Sounds like we might have a few gifted wr's. It also sounds like they not only have the coaches but another team mate who understands the technical side.
I think we will be fine. Some people just need a little confidence. The only way for that to happen is to be given the opportunity and then to run with that chance. This seems ironic in today's world of blow hards, internet tough guys and people just in general walking around arguing about everything because they are always right. But it's the ones who may not have as much confidence that have the potential. The rest, you may as well be arguing with a drunk person, you'll get just as far.
Look at Nate, the only way to make decisions faster and play faster is to see it before it happens. You feel it, you see it and until it actually starts happening unfortunately you don't trust it. You second guess.

When a coach as reserved and conservative as Kirk Ferentz personally calls you out in a press conference because you pay more attention to your phone than football, that tells me you have a shit attitude.

It’s pretty obvious he’s been told in private (probably by multiple people) to get his act together and it didn’t stick.

It shouldn’t take Copeland appealing to the public for help telling the kid to put his phone away. I get that he did it sort of tongue in cheek, but Jesus Christ. There are other issues than the phone.

I also have this off-season "unbridled hawktimism". I'll never learn!

I'm willing to cut him some slack. He's young for his grade, not turning 19 until the end of this August, and living halfway across the country. He also experienced some early success last season at ISU and that can give a youngster a false sense of security.

He reminds me of Akrum in that he's immature early in his career here. Let's hope ISM figures it out as well. He's a smart kid and pretty talented.

Consider KF himself. Probably doesn't carry his cell phone around during most waking hours. What he finds acceptable use of a cell phone is probably different than the average person under the age of 60.

I'm really pulling for this group.

First, we need them ... in a big way. And, second, they seem like a good group of guys.

We'll see how much progress Smith made this off-season. He's got some great attributes, but, when I watch him, my concern has always been a lack of "suddenness." It sounds trivial, but that's something you can't really teach, and is essential to being an effective WR at this level. Yes, he'll win the occasional jump ball, and sit down in the zone, but will he show explosion out of his breaks and the ability to separate? Time will tell.

The nice thing is that there is a lot of competition, so you would expect the cream to rise to the top, especially with a QB that is more experienced and comfortable in the offense.

Off season promise gets us all....especially at that position.

It does not help that Iowa runs on downs that they are expected to 75 percent of the time. Sometimes Iowa surprises other teams....but not often. God forbid we out smart anyone... just go out there and try to maul the other team with 2 and 3 star talent.

So you get 7 or 8 wins a year

I want what ever you are smoking. I still see nothing at WR, now TE’s are a different story. I just don’t see us running two TE sets where they are both down field every play.

Now there are plenty of things we could do to get even pedestrian WR’s open but that would go against coaches “I” formation set so... we can only dream

i think hawkeyewalker has it right. we all thought B. Smith was a can't miss with loads of talent. ISM was a surprise with his speed. if he can stop dropping the ball he's a legit threat...deep. and if B. Smith can match that, now we're talking. it's supposition right now. but i believe it will be...IF...IF we throw it enough times.
