Keep extra blockers in or attack where they blitz, I say be agressive

I hope KF and the offensive coaches are looking to attack jNW's blitz and gap defenses. Be aggressive early with quick passes into open space vacated by blitzers. Try to hit the big plays and score early then when jNW backs off into coverage run it down their throats.

This could be a game where you call the offensive plays backwards passing on first down a lot running draws and screens on long yardage downs.

As we have seen from jNW over the last 20 years they will pressure the LOS to stop the run and rush the passer so the TEs could be huge. The quick slant could be big.

How do you want to see it unfold?

On defense just maintain your gap assignments to stop the run then pressure the young QB (dont sit back and give him too much time).

Guessing we will see the three TE set that they used against OSU a couple of years ago. It allows for max protection, multiple routes to be run from the TE positions and you can play smash mouth football.

UIhawks, I'm guessing you haven't been all that satisfied with Iowa's offense over the years under KF. Neither have I.

KF's philosophy of offense has always been: here I am, come get me because I'm certainly coming to get you.
What Iowa needs this season is an element of surprise since Iowa is 'weak' at some positions of offense and is one injury away from 'weakness' at other positions of offense.

That's why I agree with you. Smash mouth won't work this game or this season for Iowa's offense. Come to think about it, an element of surprise in offense usually makes the offense more effective. An OC could say, for example, come get me here I am and surprise I'm over here.

I hope occasional elements of surprise become a staple in Iowa's offense... if one can overrule the head coach. One never knows, an occasional element of surprise might also help with the recruitment of offensive players, too.

You mean like fake FG's?

No surprises here. Three te sets and a lot of max protect. Even more play action than normal. Spread out the defense occasionally to create running lanes for canzeri...shotgun draws...screens....

I think the te's in to help our OT's will be essential to our success....we have to hit on any play that targets over aggressive defense against the run. Don't forget canzeri has been effective as a blocker as well.

screens and draws and deep throws. But, this game is entirely on the shoulders of the OL. Their success or failure will dictate what we are able to do.
