There's a short video of Wienke speaking through the link. From article:

IOWA CITY - Long before his foot hit the ball that changed this past Saturday's game between Iowa and Northern Illinois, John Wienke and the Hawkeye coaching staff had planned for that sort of 'pooch' kick.

And it worked well.

Wienke's punt, which was downed by Greg Castillo at the one-yard-line in this past Saturday's Iowa/NIU game (a 18-17 Iowa win), was part of the 'game preparation' and not a spur-the-moment decision.

And I was thinking he was going to try to kick it out at the 20 to give them a fair shot a starting a good drive. Those coaches, they think of everything.

I've been meaning to ask you if you work for Jon or what? It kinda seems like all you do is link articles from other media sources in order to 'flesh-out' the content of this site.

Then again...coming from a guy who prefers to take a knee on occasion rather than attack... it might be a bit of a surprise.

Is this for real.. If so wow..

it's a little tongue-in-cheek HP.

But you must admit, KFz has missed on a number of in-game basics things over the years... strategic use of timeouts, fundamental clock-management, "surrender" kneel-downs, punting from inside the 40 yard line, etc. So a little ribbing is in line, and this silly story is the perfect opp.

Next thing you are going to tell me is that Meyer tried to kick the football between the two yellow posts....

i might be overanalyzing this but i think its great that a little used 5th year senior directly contributes to a win.

If he's always the punter from that type of field position, the fact that he's been a QB all these years is interesting. Especially with the new touchback rule (out to the 25). I wouldn't be surprised to see us fake punt with him back there sometime this year...

Yeah - that is an interesting point about using a QB as the pooch punter. Fake is a real possibility.

But - The NCAA clarified that touchback rule of moving the ball to the 25 only applies to kickoffs. In other instances of a touchback, the ball will be placed on the 20.

I did not know that. Good to know!

If we want to improve the program, we shouldn't have any rarely used 5th year seniors on the team. If you don't contribute your first 4 years, you don't get a 5th year.
