Kaylon Williams update

Since Iowa has at least had him behind the bench I thought I would update.

He has played in only 13 games this year (missed the first three and I don't know why). Team overall is 11-5.

Leads his conference in assists at 6.6. Only one other person is averaging more than 5 and he has only played in 3 games. For reference as a freshman at Evansville he averaged 4.9 assists with a 2:1 A:T ratio. Don't know what his Turnover average is this year.

He is averaging about 11 points per game (one missing box score keeps me from giving exact number). What struck me in reviewing the box scores is that unlike some Juco players, he does not score very much when his team blows the other team out. That to me translates into he is not going out and inflating his stats against weak competition.

I have only seen Kaylon play once in prime time. He has good handles, obviously is an excellent passer and plays very good defense. From a skills perspective if a spot was open I think he would fit in very well. I can't address from a personality standpoint.

From what I heard (believe me... it's heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone) - it was a team rule violation and that's why he didn't play.

I have heard that he is a bit of a cancer - personality wise. Probably not a great fit for Iowa, but Iowa may not have much of an option not to get him in here.

I have not seen Kaylon play since high school. I guess I saw a bit of Evansville vs. North Carolina last year but he did not do a ton.

I figured the MVC was a perfect fit for him going out of high school to excel.

I don't see him as a difference maker offensively, but maybe on the defensive end he could be a big upgrade. I would like to watch him play at Kirkwood (I should check out their schedule).

I don't know I would not be opposed to Iowa adding him next year for depth at the PG position if they can not find someone better. Unless someone transfer's I don't know if there is going to be a scholarship open.

I am not in Spank's corner with evaluation Tucker. I think Tucker is ABSOLUTELY NOT a PG, I would not be opposed to him playing the Bawinkle role next year as he can shoot and I think he would be better playing less minutes. He is WAY better than Bawinkle so maybe Iowa could start to put guys in proper roles next year.

I don't know about Kaylon's personality.

That is what I assumed it was but I have no knowledge or source. I think we need some help at PG in terms of depth but I wouldn't want to hurt team chemistry as it seems this group gets along extremely well. If you are choosing between Tucker and Kaylon it is a tough call. Tucker has let his teammates down three times now but at least on the surface seems to get along with several of them (I have seen Tucker, Gatens and Cole hanging out together outside of the facility on several occasions). I think we need ball-handling and defense more than flat out shooting so I would give the edge to Kaylon there.

I agree....

Gatens, Brust (must be a good shooter), and Payne (I think he is a good shooter) are enough.

The thing that should stick out to everyone is how Iowa has streatches where their offense is inept. This happens because NO ONE can take a guy when it really needs to be done. So they pass around the perimeter a lot and do not accomplish much.

I don't know if Kaylon is the dynamic ball handler Iowa needs. I know Anthony Tucker is not a dynamic ball handler. I dont' know what type of defender Kaylon is as I have not seen him really matched up against Big 10 caliber gurads (kalin lucas)....

I think this team is very close to really surprising teams if they had a dynamic PG.

I don't agree with you Stormin that Payne, Brust and Tucker are going to put Iowa over the top. Maybe Iowa takes a 1/2 step ahead with those guys but the right guard may take Iowa 1-1.5 steps ahead.

I don't think Tucker is a starting PG. I think he is a competent backup. He's a guy that I feel can give Cully the 4-8 mins of a breather he needs. That's why I don't think bringing in a JUCO PG is necessary. I don't think Tucker is a starting PG.

I know you don't think Tucker is a starting guard. Now if Brust and Marble end up being able to create off the bounce (Have to be better than May, Gatens, Payne), then there is no need for a JUCO PG.

If Brust and Marble end up have Gatens type quicks off the bounce then Iowa really does need a JUCO PG who can start/create.

I think Iowa is a consistent creator (does not need help form picks) from being a surprise team that you predicted preseason.

Without I assume they should be better next year simply by age and depth but I don't know how much better that really makes them.

I see this team as being a legit creator away from REALLY turning the corner.

I was told today, relayed from a source who claims to know, that Iowa is not interested in Williams for the same reasons they didn't go after him earlier.

That, however, does not seem to jibe with the reports that we have a coach or coaches at recent K'wood games.

It could be that the coaches are just being courteous to maintain in-state relationships, when in fact they're preparing to select among the several elite 2010 PG's they secretly have ready to commit as soon as a scholarship becomes available.

There was an article about Kaylon in the CR gazette a couple weeks ago. His coach at Kirkwood said that Kaylon was suspended at the start of the season for issues both off and on the court. No details were given.

I have heard 2 stories on this Freddie. But I tend to go with the one that says we ARE interested because obviously we are attending his games and giving him tickets to sit behind the Hawkeye bench.

Perhaps we should also take a look at the other guard, Jordan Stoermer.

So I guess my question spank is what happens if god forbid Cully gets hurt. I think you need at least two guys on your team that are capable starting PG. If Gatens goes down, there will be Brust or Marble to take his place and could probably start at the 2 position (obviously not as well but at least capable). If Cully goes down next year and we haven't improved depth than you are looking at a either Tucker or a freshman playing the point. I would add that we are not bringing in a natural point guard like Cully was this year. That is a worse situation than we have this year and I would say that our PG play this year is the worst in the Big Ten.

Good point. We would be in deep deep trouble if that happened. Think of that right now, if Cully went down. Iowa would be lucky to score 40 PPG.

Man I don't even want to think about that. That is why I think if you have 13 scholarships at least 2 have to go to true PGs. It sounds like this debate is moot with Tucker coming back Monday. Unless there is somebody else leaving (and no I have no inside info).

That's a big if. From what I hear, Williams is an excelllent defender. For that reason alone I'd like to have him, as I think our perimeter defense is awful. Plus, relying on a sophmore (Payne) and true freshmen to man the point is a recipe for disaster. This team needs an immediate influx of upperclassmen at the guard position, otherwise we are still a couple of years away from POTENTIALLY being viable.

ICHAWK said......I saw a bit of Evansville vs. North Carolina last year but he did not do a ton.

Kaylon played 25 minutes vs. the National Champs to be, on their court. He scored 9 pts (4-7), had 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 turnover and 1 steal vs. the best team in the country. This was also in his 9th college game. He played very well, imo, and I was impressed with his play while watching the game on tv.

I agree, Iowa's perimeter defense is flat out bad. Looks like Tucker is back, so the only way a schollie opens up for Williams/any JUCO player is if someone transfers. I don't really forsee a transfer especially if Brommer is going to get more PT as the Big 10 season goes on.
