JVB's comment about six deep balls this game

On the radio interview after the game JVB said that coach Davis told them he wanted at least six deep passes, (either thrown or completed, I am not sure which) this game. I am confused at what to take away from that. Does that mean that Davis knows that we need to get the ball down the field more and we are not capable of doing it? Something else?

would be news to me...and an interesting comment. with all the GD hate, i'd bet a ton of money that a lot is also on JVB for not taking advantage of legit opportunities to throw downfield. there were some calls that obviously were on GD, but a lot that JVB just didn't even try on. we'll never know...at least until the JVB tell all book..

You know thatmakes me think. On TV I can't see the pass routes that are run. I just see the ball. So I don't knowif the recvers are running deep routes and they are throwing tot he underneath guy or if most of the time the receivers are all runing short routes.

Could it be that Vandy does not trust the WR to catch a ball when covered?

I'd agree with that. It's hard to know how the system would work without a QB whose only decision making was: 1st read or check down. There were too many times that there was a WR wide open that JVB either ignored or underthrew when he didn't ignore them. I'm not sure GD's system consisted of poor footwork, hearing imaginary footsteps, poor throws, having only one read (which JVB did last year), etc.

However, there were too many times where (what seemed to be) the primary receiver was short of the sticks by YARDS on 3rd down. There were too many routes that took receivers and their momentum right towards the sideline while only being just a few yards beyond the LOS. There are parts of his system that are practically designed to limit what the offense can do, it's incomprehensible.

I still don't know what to think about the viability of this "read offense" but I can say one thing. Yesterday I took my family to the game so of course I took along my camera. Even though I did not have a lot of "keepers" (mainly due to sitting in Row 65) I can tell you that I was able to lock my camera on the intended Hawkeye receiver within a split second of JV getting the snap and there was only 1 pass that went to someone I wasn't expecting so I can only imagine how much easier it was for DBs and the Husker defense to do the same.

I'm sure he wanted 6 deep balls thrown to open up the underneath routes that are Davis' bread and butter. But no one was biting on it anyway.

Down by 6, time running out, 60 yards to go, Davis streaking free down the sideline, and JVB throws a 1-yrd square-in to a guy who is double-covered for a pic. The epitome of JVB all-season long.

The receivers have run deep routes regularly for the past ten years. Its a part of the game plan. They drag safeties out of positions to free up the tight ends, they start routes and then block, the take hot reads and do out routes. Running deep routes over and over again without a target, or even a chance or a target is frustrating. Its the same thing year after year. We don't have leaping tall wideouts most years to make the kind of long throws and acrobatic catches you see in the NFL.

JVB was at least good against the weaker defenses in '11 so I refuse to believe it's mostly his fault the entire offense went in the dumper in '12. That, and everything the Texas fans said would happen when Davis was hired actually did happen. I think that is a big reason we never saw anyone else take a snap - KF didn't want to ruin anyone else. Gerg Davis is just one of those lucky people who has had a long, lucrative career despite being mostly incompetent. It does happen sometimes.

If he's back next year I will **** my pants and mail them to KF.
