JVB Sacked for TD Play

Looked alot like the same play in the same field position when Stanzi went down against NW back in 0'9. Good thing JVB had a sense of the rush and avoided a blind side hit like Stanzi took. I personally don't hate KOK's play calling but I'm not in love with them, especially after that play call. When you are inside your own 1 yd line you can bet your #ss off the team will run blitz and that was exactly what Purdue did and in that case PA pass is possibly the worst play to call. If you want to pass in that situation, pass, don't risk our QB. We were lucky just to give up 7 points instead of losing a QB for the season. SMH
 
No Stanzi's was a naked boot. Vandy's was a straight drop PA pass. Vandy still should have thrown the ball away.

With two previous examples of why these types of plays don't work in our own end zone one would like to think it would never happen again...

What are you talking about, this play and the one Stanzi got hurt on were 2 totally different plays.

He had a good sense of the rush because the freaking pocket collapsed all around him and he stepped forward to avoid the rush because there was nowhere else to go when he got hit.

And WTF does it mean "if you want to pass in that situation then pass, don't risk our QB"? He didn't drop back for the helluva it and it wasn't a QB draw.

It never works. There is a reason that you never see this play. As has been pointed out the last time we ran a play similar to this we lost Stanzi for 3 games. This time we gave up an easy TD. You would like to think that the coaching staff would have learned from the first time, they didn't. Now one hopes that they will learn from the second time, odds say they haven't.
 
What drove me crazy about that play was that the receiver to the bottom of the screen had his man playing about 10 yards off. If we must pass in that situation, why not throw a quick pass there and let him get even just a few yards for some breathing room on his own. I hated seeing Vandy drop back at all there.
 
I don't agree with the call, but if it woulda worked everyone woulda been like wow kok is great .... T is right. You can't win
 
I agreed with the call. Iowa had the wind at their back and Purdue had everyone up. Take the shot. Vandenberg has to get rid of the football.
 
a different pass play could have been called with the same personnel. 3 step drop with a slant or a fade makes much more sense. love the aggressiveness, hate the playcall.

First thought in my mind was "Throw it to that guy!" You don't want to run a PA in your own end zone, it attracts people to the LOS which is the opposite of what you want at that part of the field. I'm fine with a pass play as long as the routes are quick, spending a bunch of time with the ball in the end zone is not a good idea.
 
Agreed. Get rid of the ball quickly. Gotta know you can't rely on the pocket holding up there.

Vandy still comes up to the line with his mind made up on what he is going do sometimes and it kills him.

Exactly. P/A attracts the D to the LOS and it takes time to develop, meaning the OL have to maintain blocks longer with the QB dropping to a spot closer than normal to the LOS.

You never run P/A or pitches when you're backed up to the goalline.
 
The ball as to come out fast and JVB got happy feet too early. Watch the play, he went into panic mode when he saw the pressure. Throw the ball out of bounds fast, take the grounding penalty, you lose 1/2 yard in penalty yards and loss of down. Much better result than a fumble touchdown.

I love the season JVB is having, but he needs to be calmer in the pocket when he sees pressure. He gets the ball out pretty fast...he needs to rely on that. It's ok to throw it into the ground at his receivers feet...Brad Rogers was right there.
