Just watched the replay on BTN

Man we were oh so close to possibly closing that thing out. Couple of things I didn't really notice before that were huge in that last drive:

Earlier in that last drive we had them 2nd and 13 and they ran a reverse to Shelton and Nate Mier just missed contain a little that would have probably kept that play to about no gain or possibly a loss. Who knows what would have happened next.

Then on that 4th and 2 keeper, Jewell had an opportunity to blow through a line gap and tackle Cook for a loss, but continued on down the line to where the tackle eventually occurred. In real time I'm sure he didn't see it, just wished he would have. It would have been awesome.

Last observation was we kind of wasted a time out with our last one not due to anyone's fault. We called time out right away, then an MSU player goes to the ground with injury. Sure could have used that time out later.

Truly a game of inches. Such a hard fought game on both sides. Hopefully those few missed inches are found in Pasedena and turn out to be feet or yards.

GO HAWKS!!!

Cook is hurt. Someone on Iowa's coaching staff should've game planned for this. No long throws for Cook. Not much steam.

A lot of things we could rehash but the outcome will be the same. I thought the biggest change in the game was the 15 yarder we got on supposedly hitting the punter.Oh well. Let's get healthy and reenergized for the Rose Bowl.Go Hawks

Yeah, that was BS, but, Grandpa, like you said, get healthy and let's do battle w/Stanford.....I gotta feeling these boys will be hungry again when on that field.....

That was definitely a running into, not roughing. 5 yards would not have been a first down... but that 15 yarder killed it.

Lol I agree just watched a clip on BIG network that showed Josey being tackled by 75 on last play.It still hurts.

I watched that on the replay last night, slo-mo'd it several times, and the guy literally had his arms wrapped around Josey's legs and rode him to the ground! Also saw a play on that same drive where i believe we had them 3rd and something at around midfield, Cook scrambled to his right, Josey came untouched through the line and was going to catch Cook from behind when their running back gave Josey a push from behind, causing him to fall forward to the turf. I had thought overall the refs had done a pretty good job up to that point, but it seemed like the flags were stuck in their pants on that Mich State drive. As hard as our guys fought that whole game i think they deserved better....

Anybody got a replay of this play? Dont remember it...might have something to do with the 16 gin tonics i drank:D:D:D:D

No but I also slowed it down and Josey was coming through untouched to make the play and when he turned to get the runner #75 reached out with both arms and tackled him from behind.

Check out the 2:00:00 mark. The hold gets worse every time I watch it. The bird's eye view angle is the best (or worst).

Wow, my BP just spiked again. I am going to stop watching it. Yes, Jewel is there. Textbook tackle by #75. Wrapped those legs real good. Jewell may not have stopped him but he would have slowed him down enough that the others would have stopped Scott sooner, not allowing the arm movement I believe.

And Mends was like a torpedo zeroing in on the ball. Great awareness by Scott to quickly raise the ball to avoid Mends. No way does Scott hold on if Mends hits it. Mends was coming in hot.

Also, it has been pointed out but first time I saw it. If Lomax plays Cook on 4th and 2, he probably drops him for no gain. Wow.

Plus, watch King's ensuing return. I think if he goes straight ahead instead of cutting inside he may have gone. Looks like just one juke on 99 would have been required. Right before King cuts, it appears he thinks another Sparty is going one way but actually goes another or maybe he got chipped by a blocker and gets slightly turned.

The point of all of this is that it was an EPIC battle that could have gone either way. It makes all these moments question , "What if?" Crazy. Like those Ali-Frazier slugfests.

There were a couple of people having this discussion on one of the other boards. My take...Lomax was doing exactly what he was coached to do. A safety is almost never going to have QB on an option play (100% never in any of the defenses I've ever coached in) and will always rally to the pitchman. MSU came up with a great formation and a great playcall...thing is, we recognized it but also put ourselves in the situation by our alignment.

MSU went unbalanced, bringing in 4 OL (or maybe a TE was out there to the right/strong side) to the right of the center, with just two men to the left. They also aligned a blocking back to the strong side and the back to the weak side to suggest a strong side run was coming. I don't know how MSU does it, but speed option is a numbers game. If you line up and a defense overstacks one side of the formation (due to the offensive formation or otherwise), you audible to speed option out the back door/weak side. That's why I say we recognized the formation...our 1 technique is slid all the way to the strong shade of the center. So there's 2 gaps open to the weak side with only Hesse and Fisher, along with Lomax 5 yards deep (King was there, I believe, but he had a WR to his side he was manned up on). Even if you include a strong side Jewell, we're outnumbered 6 to 5 to the weak side because MSU had their strongside guard reach our strong 1 technique, leaving BOTH the LG and C to release to the 2nd level.

In a spread speed option play, you would leave an end unblocked and option him (from a 2x2 set), but you certainly aren't limited to that as they are many ways to run (and block) speed option. In this play, MSU appeared to zone it and it didn't look like Cook had any intention of ever pitching the ball. Even the RB didn't really run the rep at full speed...this was a case where they saw something they liked on film or after they'd lined up that they took advantage of. If you notice, due to the DL being on skates and the reach attempt by the LT, the play actually hits right up the tail of the LG or so...Lomax is a D gap player against that formation and really didn't have much of a shot to make a play on Cook, even though it appeared he tried when he realized the "keep" was imminent. Even if Lomax decided to play the QB, he would have had to gone through the mess that was Fisher/Jewell/MSU LG/MSU C and with the size disadvantage/fatigue MSU's line had already moved the LOS back a yard or two, allowing Cook to merely fall forward. Having said that, our guys did a hell of a job fighting through and making it close, but the damage was done from the snap of the ball, and even before that with the formation. Can't say we were misaligned necessarily though...if they go right with the RB and the blocking back tries to create an edge, there's potentially 6 gaps to the offenses right. MAYBE Jewell could have been misaligned by 1 gap (s/b weak instead of strong) but I don't know the play call.

Wow. Really good stuff. Surprisingly, I believe I followed everything you said.

Now I have tons of questions regarding other plays in that game. But what's the point?? Do we move on to Stanford?

There's really no reason for a ref to miss that. The ref behind the Sparty line had a clear view of it. That should have been a 10yd penalty. Why didn't Jewell say something to the ref. If he made a scene about it, the announcers might have said something about it. Oh well, it's just a game, right?

Michigan State plays dirty. It's what they do, it's who they are, it's why I hate them and for crissakes it's forcing me to...gag...pull for Alabama. F Sparty. I hope Saban prison-trains em.

This game was a travesty.

On the lucky interception play, that was clearly targeting. If he does not make that dirty play the ball is caught, Iowa TD. Or if it is called Iowa gets the ball 1st and goal at the 2, and Iowa likely scores a TD. M$U goes into the last drive down by 11.

On the last "touchdown" play Josey Jewell was in position to make the tackle when a m$u lineman grabbed him from behind. The holding call should have been made putting them back to the 12 yard line, no TD, and chances are low that they get one. In fact they had no touchdowns all day without cheating!

I should also mention Matt Vandeberg getting grabbed when he was going to go for a TD. The penalty should be the same as it is in the nfl putting Iowa in fg position. It should at least have been a PI rather than holding since the ball was in the air. This would have given Iowa 5 more yards.

2 rules change should come from this game. First off the PI rule mentioned above. Second coaches should be able to use their challenge on missed calls like the holding and targeting since they were obvious.
