Just listened to a live broadcast (Local Nashville) of Pearl

Sure it may be nothing, but mind you that Pearl is pretty much a marketing promotion genius. You think he doesn't know exactly what's happening with Iowa right now? You think he didn't purposely talk that much about the Big 10 and Iowa unprovoked like that? You think he didn't know that it would get back to Iowa City and the message boards within minutes? Again, it may be nothing, but considering who Pearl is....it's def not crazy to think it's something.

Knoxville and Nashville are nice, enlightened places. However, in a lot of Tennessee, you can hear echos of Dueling Banjos.

And rural Iowa is like the Tuscan countryside?

If you think the hinterland in Iowa is more enlightened than Tennessee, I suggest you spend 10 minutes with my wife's cousins. Want a preview? Their living room is wallpapered in hunting camo.

That's how I took his interview. He had absolutely no reason to bring up Iowa AT ALL but he did it twice. Iowa is on his mind.

Sounds to me like Pearl is lookin for a raise from Tennessee.

My thoughts too. In my opinion, he did that for a reason. Whether it's to try and get a raise or to flame his interest from Iowa fans is unknown. but I think he knew exactly what he was doing.

In my best John Cleese voice:

Let me be perfectly clear. I had no intention of disparaging anyone of Tennessee origins. I apologize to anyone who has ever even been in Tennessee..or has relatives who have been there. Tennessee is full of fine, upstanding americans who have a long history of tolerance, and love for people of all race, creed or place of birth. Tennessee is one of the finest places on this earth. Full of wise, intelligent, well educated wonderful human beings. If anyone has been offended by my insensitive comment that could be construed as tarnishing their stellar reputation as the finest humans that God chose to populate that cherished ground,I sincerely apologize..Ok?

You've clearly never visited Tennessee, nor the Knoxville area in particular.

Funny - I wonder if we have some of the same in laws. Seriously though don't believe any of that "New South" business it is still very much the "Old South".

Wasn't trying to pick on you. I have just seen it about a thousand times on this board where somebody implies that Americans who happen to live in the South are either racist, stupid, or backwards, or all three. It is dumb to discount entire populations of our country by painting them with such a broad brush (p.s. that thought process is not that different than the thought process of actual racists).

My point is that there are plenty of backwards, stupid, and racist people all over Iowa.

I taught for a year on the East side of Des Moines, so I have no notions on the cultural superiority of Iowans over anyone.

I understood your point and had no problem with it.

Kirk does this kind of thing all the time. Or, at least he used to.

If Pearl comes to Iowa, Tennessee athletics is going to have a rough couple months, Kiffin abruptly leaves for USC and Pearl comes to Iowa. Ouch.

+1. As if nobody in Iowa (or the North, for that matter) was stupid, racist, or backwards. And as if the only music in Tennessee is banjo music? WTH? Memphis=blues and rock. Nashville=country. Chattanooga has Usher, Iowa has Slipknot??? They're so melodic.

I have yet to see a real dirt, gravel country road down here. In Iowa, you can't miss 'em. Nothing wrong with that, just saying don't make generalizations you know nothing about.

Bingo.

I spent quite a bit of time in Nashville and Knoxville. I'm also from central Iowa. Nashville has a thriving music scene, and is a great place to spend some time. My former company was located there. Vanderbilt is there. Knoxville is a blast, and the natural beauty as you head into the Smoky Mtns is amazing.

Central Iowa, well, it was home for me. Great people in Iowa. No so exciting, and like anywhere, has its contingent of rednecks.
