Just Iowa's luck

Michigan State beat jNW today and shot 3/11 from the arc. What did they shoot vs Iowa? 70 something %?

Oh and Travis Trice? 0/2.

I didn't see today's game, but we gave up a butt load of wide open shots. I can see where watching our guys constantly clank wide open looks from the outside can throw off your judgement, but a wide open 3-pointer should be at least a 50% shot for an average D1 shooter. I'm guessing NW didn't give up as many great looks.

Pretty frustrating. Just because someone gets open doesn't mean they're going to make it. Teams miss open shots all the time unless they're playing us.

50% is fine but 70% is just ridiculous. I didn't watch either but I doubt Northwestern's defense was anywhere near THAT much better than ours was.

The other thing that gets me is how well visiting teams shoot against us at Carver. ISU and MSU both torched the nets against us. Other teams seem to hit a decent % too.

80% of it had nothing to with luck...

Of course Travis Trice was 0-2.... he was 7-8 last game - you think Northwestern might have spend just a "tad" of time in practice on that.

Giving up 75% 3pt shooting is far from just bad luck

M$u stinks they are a bunch of hacks, Trice is the worst of the bunch. That punk can't play his way out of a paper bag.

I hear what you are saying but the bad part of it is, is that we lost to them. :( At this time an old saying comes to my mind. I don't remember who said it, surely one of you will know who said it. "I have seen the enemy and it is us."

Maybe our perimeter defense is awful with a lack of quickness on the perimeter? Maybe we could have used someone like Morgan who is at UNI? Poor recruiting is all I can say.

Trice was very hesitant to shoot open or covered 3's today. It seemed the game plan was for Trice to drive and dish for higher percentage shots or drive to draw fouls. It certainly showed up in Trice's stat line -- 10 assists, 1 turnover, and 8 for 10 from the FT line.

The worst part was that it delayed BTN from showing the start of the Iowa Purdue game. There was nothing worse than turning the TV on to see Mellisa Dixon just to see that punk Trice. I had to leave the room.

Is that the answer to everything? Recruit someone who is a solid player in a one bid league like the MVC to be the difference maker in a Power 5 league full of high level players. Okay!

Northwestern plays tougher than Iowa and with more enthusiasm. They are also more disciplined than Iowa. Rutgers beat Wisconsin tonight. I'm sorry but if Iowa loses focus they are in huge trouble and could lose the season already. No team is an automatic win for Iowa. Most teams probably see Iowa as a fragile and weak team.

This. Luck is most likely the difference between 50% and 75%, but giving up 50% is pretty damn bad, too.

I would say about half of a team's shooting percentage is due to their opponent. The other half is due to the shooters. Last night Rutgers rained in tough shot after tough shot. It was just one of those nights for them. I'm just glad it wasn't us on the receiving end.

Using the example of the best team in the conference losing to the worst team as a reason why there are no automatic wins for Iowa doesn't really say much. Clearly that game shows that there are no automatic wins for any team.

Career games against Iowa has been happening on a regular basis for as long as I can remember.

True.

I remember back in the Larry Morgan & Mac McCausland days, Morgan would say something to the effect of "<insert player name here> had recently been struggling with his shot, but tonight.." This has been going on for a long time.

Then again, Mr. Davis's teams didn't exactly play lock down defense, either, especially when it came to guarding the arc.
