Just how RARE was that? Check out these stats...

From ESPNStatsInfo:

Iowa is the 2nd unranked Big Ten team to beat Wisconsin at home under coach Bo Ryan. Other was Illinois in February 2010.

Iowa is also only the 2nd unranked team to score at least 72 pts at home vs Wisconsin under Bo Ryan. (Minnesota had 74 in Feb '06)

Wisconsin was 3 of 28 3-pt FG vs Iowa. In last 15 seasons, this is the first time in 47 games w/ 25 3-pt FG att that they made 3 or fewer.

I believe not only was the intensity better on both ends of the floor but I also believe a hidden factor was the transition/running game off of a miss....

These stiff teams like Wisconsin, Purdue, Northwestern you want to force them into an up-tempo game. They cannot handle it and it ends up affecting their shooting both physically (legs) and mentally (have-to-get-back on D)...

How many easy baskets and great shots did we get in transition. In the second half they we keeled over and could not get back. We had a number of 3 on 1 breaks.

This is exactly how we upset Purdue last year, last game....

Kudos!!! Love Fran the Man!

Pretty awesome stats. BB is fun to watch and I plan on finding a couple tickets this year. We need to get Carver rocking again for Fran and the boys!!

Spank, can you post Frans post presser? I cant seem to find it and Docterman must have the day off.

I think we all need to keep this in mind when we start thinking 'we're back'. No question a big win, but Wisconsin's lack of offense sure helped.

As mentioned, though, the transition game likely had at least some impact on Wisconsin's poor shooting. They weren't shooting well to begin with, but you don't get better with tired legs. If allowed to play at their slow pace, they probably break out of that funk at some point in the game.

Glass 1/2 empty?
Didn't LIck have a win against Mich st......was he "back". I'm being realistic. Yes Iowa did EVERYTHING they had to do to win, take nothing away from them....BUT, shooting 2-30 from 3pt land is crazy. At least half of them were WIDE open. The bounces fell our way. A win is a win, but we still have plenty of work to do in order to sustain play like this.

I've been able to watch two games this year. Clemson and now Wisconsin. I'm now convinced there is alien life in the universe. Cartwright, Basabe, and Marble were abducted for the Clemson game and have now returned to start the Big Ten season.

they did shoot poorly but a lot of bounces didn't go our way.

Wisconsin is not a very deep team. They only played eight players today. The bench contributed 42 minutes, 33 from Brust. In contrast, Iowa got 63 minutes from its bench with Cartwright & White coming off the bench.

Duh.

Of course Iowa has a lot of work to do. Can't take anything away from beating a good team in their house, though.

Negative people are plentiful on HN.

I was just ribbing ya cibula....but it does feel different under Fran than it ever did under Lick. Listening to Lick's post game pressers vs Fran's and you can hear the difference. Lick answers always had me wondering how he got his shoes tied in the morning.

they have a lot of work to do to be conference contenders but they are pretty close to not being bottom feeders anymore and right now that's a good sign

not being negative at all. I'm excited. No question a win is HUGE, especially on the road.....which is something that NO Iowa coach as been able to do in over a decade.

I agree. Plus you know that you don't have to win 42-36 in order to get the Mich St. and Wisconsin's of the world. Up tempo killed Wisky today.

I hear you.... I am one who does think we are not back but 'ON OUR WAY'....

Yes many more losses ahead as we have 1.5 years of lick to wipe away but it's coming and you can see things coming together. Even in some of the losses like Purdue we were a handful of plays away from winning. Keep in mind also Fran is in the process of changing a mindset for not only players but a tough fan-base to please. It's happening one step at a time.

The brand of basketball is just better. Next year we are brining in 5 more bodies. We lose two very good players in Gatens & Cartwright which is disappointing but it's a 5 to 2 trade. We will have 3 guys 6'10" inches and better which means we will have a true post player for the first time in a long time. Basabee can play the 4 then along with White who can play the 3 also. Again... lot of options going forward.

The only piece I think we might be a little short on is another knock-down 3 point shooter besides Olgesby. White can shoot the three also though so that is awesome given is 6'8" frame.

I AM PUMPED FOR THE FUTURE!!!! Get on the bandwagon while there is room. Encourage this program and don't panic when things don't go our way. This is a process -> journey!

Please stop mentioning that Lick beat MSU...blah, blah, blah, blah....

Just stop comparing anything that Fran is doing to what Lick did...blah, blah, blah...

Iowa is playing as a team and the core of Marble-Basabe-White is really going to lead Iowa this season and throw in Cartwright as he appears to have no lingering effects of the hamstring injury.
The future with the aforemention three and Oglesby showing he is a capable player as well in encouraging.

Going to Wisconsin and winning is something that should be long remembered, when we look back at today, it just may very well be the day the Iowa truly turned the corner.

The team played well today and that combination of players at the end of the game looks like a very good unit. There are only a handful of decent big men in the BIG and I thought Iowa played great post D down the stretch and rebounded well down the stretch. Total team effort and came out like they had something to prove.

This is the biggest Iowa basketball win since 05-06. We looked like a Big Ten team today. We outplayed a very good team.

Yes, after watching him the other night, he is composed and always seems to be in control. He doesn't look like a whole lot, but he gets where he wants, when he wants.
When he has the ball in his hands there is no panic and he is a leader.
Gesell aslo appears to be fearless, something that White and Marble are.

Fran has had to change the whole culture surrounding Iowa basketball, beating MSU by 20 last season and Purdue to end the season at home were huge. Today beating Wisconsin at Wisconsin is something that is a program changing win.
Like others, I am not saying Iowa is going to contend, but this is another one of those "building blocks" that a program has to win to go where it wants.

Fran brings a mindset and mental toughness to Iowa that is has so desperately needed. There are so many attributes that he brings to Iowa, today is just a taste of what is to come.
