I read on Twitter that Johnson was playing Hooker's star position at the end of Illinois (slot CB with lots of run responsibility). I think it will be really interesting to see how that personnel wrinkle effects both playing time and recruitment going forward.
Basically, the 4-2-5 has become Iowa's new base. Iowa can still go 4-3, as they did when Nebraska brought in multiple TE (Hockaday replaced Stone), but they have spent most of games #5-12 in a 4-2-5.
Hooker can flop S to Star; might DJ Johnson flop CB to Star? What becomes of Craddieth and Merriweather (both seem like potential Star candidates)?
The other way this effects personnel is what becomes of the LBs? If we only play with 2 traditional LB, what becomes of those extra bodies who are not getting on the field? Next year the returning 2-deep LB will include: Colbert, Niemann, Jones, Welch, Wade, and Doyle (showed up on 2-deep at least once). To that, you add Seth Benson and couple promising 2nd years who did not see the field (McDonald and Klemp), as well as the incoming Fr (the Cedar Falls kid seems pretty special).
Do you start training some of these guys to be pass-rush specialists? As phenomenal as AJE and A. Nelson are, it was pretty scary watching them try to coral Martinez on 3rd and 4th and long. Iowa could potentially use more speed in those situations, and one or both of the DEs could kick down. Perhaps you take the headiest, all-around players and they focus on LB, and the rest work to become situational DEs?
