Josh Oglesby's refusal to take shots confounds McCaffery

Okay we don't know if he does or says anything 1 on 1 with him when nobody is around. That's what's gonna matter the most.

You are not very bright if you think he doesn't talk to him 1 on 1. I've watched him talk to him 1 on 1 at the games so I highly doubt he feels it's a waste of breath to talk to him any other time. He is the coach. Of course he talks to the players.

I understand how Fran is frustrated but he should have never even let his confidence to get this low and to this point. Sure he's gonna lose some from people like us who complain when he misses but then complain when he doesn't shoot but Fran can't let it get to the point where he's not taking open looks.

From what I've read, Fran has been encouraging Oglesby to shoot the ball when he has open looks since Day 1. He's had a lot of praise for Oglesby for his play in several games this year and said he was one of the best players on the court in preseason last fall. Oglesby has been the #2 player off the bench in most games this year. Josh has the 6th most minutes played on the team and would be #5 in minutes had he not missed a game. He leads the team in assist to turnover ratio, plays solid D, and has the second most rebounds of all the backcourt players.

I don't see any evidence that Fran has "let his confidence get this low and to this point."

You're absolutely correct, IMO. Fran has done exactly what you are supposed to do with person that struggles to perform under pressure. Keep throwing them in the fire, hoping that they overcome their mental hurdles. That's what it is, with JO. It's 100% mental and I knew that by how badly he was missing shots. Throwing up air balls when the game was on the line? Like most athletes that have issues with the mind, it can be something that they never get past. He actually seemed to rebound last season but has regressed this year. Likely due to the expectation of an expanded role in the offense, now that Marble is gone. Fran has been in a difficult position with JO. For the sake of wins/losses, he probably should have limited JO's role at the end of his SO season and encouraged him to look elsewhere for more playing time. On the other hand, JO was making every shot in practice so I understand why Fran decided to stick with him. He's not a liability in any other facet of the game. It's a tough spot for Fran and JO.

I just feel so darn bad for J.O. He plays decent defense, passes very well, does not turn the ball over, seems to have good court sense, is experienced and mature. But, when he can't or won't shoot the ball effectively, as least on occasion, I think we will continue to see his minutes reduced. I think Fran has done everything possible to help Josh, because that is just the kind of guy Fran is. Just my thoughts.
