JR High and High school kids bully all the time. A lot of kids look up to NFL players and see this type of crap. I think it sends a terrible message. NFL should stop this.

Seriously!!?? It's a damn haircut. Things could be far worse. I guess that pesky rock 'n roll nonsense should be banned from the radio too. It's brainwashing our children.
Please tell me you aren't serious... Hazing can be a problem but this kind of stuff is extremely light-hearted and on good fun. Remove the branch from your posterior.

The hazing thing is kind of falling by the way-side. Brad Stevens has disallowed it with his Boston Celtics under the reasoning that these rookies are an important part of the team, and they should not be treated as if they are any less important. He seems to be a pretty good coach, particularly on the player-relation side of things.
When hazing is done in good fun, it is team bonding. When some take it too far, it is bullying. If you have good leadership on the team, they should know where the line is.
I played small-college sports. There was mild hazing. There were good guys on the team who could see when a young guy was getting legitimately embarrassed/upset, and they would ease up and throw an arm around him. There were some others (typically players who were not very good whose positions were being directly challenged by the young guys) who were very mean spirited and wanted to humiliate. As I said, a team with strong leaders will have lots of the former, and will not tolerate the latter.

This is absurd. Hazing is done to create bro-dom. Shared sacrifice. Pay dues. If you're such a whiny byatch that your tendies are launched into space over some pranks by the time you make a pro league, you're going to get eaten alive by the grown ass men you will face off against on the other team.
I honestly don't think this country could win WWII with the candy asses we have running around today.
Your opinion has merit. I would tend to trust Brad Stevens' opinion on the matter more, however. And as I said earlier, some hazing creates "bro-dom", and other hazing is done to create a class structure and keep young'uns in their place. If you don't trust the leaders of the team to find the line, which I imagine is increasingly hard with increasing player movement at the pro level, then perhaps you don't risk it.
How does everyone feel about the rookie backpacks in MLB?
I feel like that is in fun. I think the haircut stuff is in fun (although some people are a lot more serious about their hair than I). I had to sing a song in front of the team in the cafeteria; frankly, it scared the hell out of me because I am such an introvert and a horrible singer. But it helped me come out of my shell. Lucky for me, there was an older guy within my position group who mercifully cut it off as it started to get ugly (thanks, Bartosh!).
I would be interested to hear what others have gone through, and what they felt was in the name of bonding, and what was too far.

Nothing wrong with getting a haircut! My high school football coach got his head shaved after we went all the way with no losses at the end of the season! It just motivated us to work hard. and he motivated us to work hard in every game. Now, tell me how is that sending the wrong message? It was a fun season and it was just hard work every day during the season.

Completely independent of the relative merits of hazing, "They have been doing it for a long time" and "They should be able to take it" are not very compelling reasons to do something. If those were the only standards, we would still be denying football players water during practice.
Whether or not you want to allow hazing on your team should come down to the following questions:
- Does it accomplish anything worthwhile?
- Does it come with any risks?
- Are the risks worth the rewards?
- Are there other ways to accomplish the same benefits with fewer risks?
In terms of some of the benefits of this type of hazing (hair cuts, backpacks, etc.), there is the shared-experience thing (I did it, now you are doing it). I think one of the other really important aspects of this is for the young guys to understand that sometimes you need to sacrifice some individuality for the team. Even if it is something as trivial as sacrificing your preferred haircut so the rest of the team gets a laugh, I think it has value.
