Jones is done at MLB ?

He definitely was amped up... he kept falling for the fake and getting sucked up into traffic. Hopefully he can slow things down.

If you get a chance watch the replay. It is not like watching the coaches video, but focus on the linebacker play. It was more than being just amped up.......it was like he wasn’t reading his keys at all, just guessing. By the middle of the 1st qtr. he was just reacting and wasn’t reading at all.

Years ago I had a young, female Springer Spaniel. I was very disappointed with her in that she was the most timid "hunting dog" I ever owned. I tried to teach her to hunt but she was so afraid she didn't want to go out into the woods and when she did, she would barely wander more than 1-2 feet from my feet. One day, giving it another try, we were out hunting Ruffed Grouse. By chance we walked upon an unseen Grouse and about one foot from me the Springer bumped into the Grouse and it flew off wildly to live another day. From that moment on she loved to hunt and ended up being the best hunter I ever owned. She changed from a lap dog to a born hunter in one second.

I had given up on her. The transformation was amazing.

I once knew a man from Nuntucket...

Nobody is giving up on Jones...my god man...I hate a thread with a title like that.

"Hell, when we started, we thought the Stork was brain damaged."

This coaching staff would never give up on a player period.

He just needs some time, and coaching. He will be fine. Think back to those high school days when you first played. I got an opportunity to play varsity as a sophomore. The first couple times I got the ball, I have no recollection of anything...I just ran...didn't see anything...didn't read anything...honestly not really sure what happened...but i ended up with 12 yards on the carry. Next few times, same thing. I thought the game was so much faster...but the truth is, I was so jacked up or scared of making a mistake...it was all instinct. After a quarter or so, and 3-4 more carries...I started to see things (the defense), and was able to make cuts, stiff arm...etc. That's what I saw in Jones yesterday, but in big time college football I can only imagine the speed things are moving.

If you noticed...at the end of the game...he looked much better and I thought he looked solid. He may have lost his spot for awhile...but my guess is that he gets a few series in the first half against ISU and if he's solid...he's back where they need him.

@hawkeyegamefilm mentioned the same thing:

I also saw it live from the stadium. When he got back in midway through the 4th, he did seem to be settled down a bit. There was a run play when he exploded through the back and planted him, showing his short-area quickness.

It was probably be a painful film session for him yesterday, but I am sure he learned a lot.

yeah...there was a play early where I'm trying to remember whether NIU had a two back set and the lead blocker goes to the right and Jones immediately shoots the hole where the blocker went. The back who gets the ball goes left to the vacated spot for a large gain. That may be something NIU saw in the North Dakota game a year earlier. They had Jewell doing the same thing. In the middle, you have to diagnose quickly...but knowing where the ball is has to be paramount. There will be a few painful moments for Amani...but he's big and athletic...we need guys like him.

To be clear, I’m not saying Jones is done. I think the WIL spot is where he might best fit. Maybe Welch or Doyle at MLB is the way to go? Important decisions ahead of Week 2.

Jones played possessed when he got back in late in the game. I watched him closely. Granted, the game was over, but he played like a guy trying to earn it. He keeps working like that...the rest will work out. Hes got the athletic talent to spare.

Yep he was completely out of position on those two big NIU runs. They would have been five yard runs if Jones was disciplined. I’m not giving up on him, but I’d prefer to give him another shot against UNI. Montgomery is a stud and we can’t give him any advantage.

The ISU game will likely be a tough, but after that you have UNI that might be the stretch where the light bulb comes on for Jones.

Hockaday may not be the long term answer, but they need a quick fix for the ISU game. They can work others in as opportunities arise.

Remember the players don't see what we see from the TV angle.

As DB in high school I remember how hard it was to see through all the linemen to the backfield. I had to watch the tight end and react on that read. There were plays that started and ended and I never saw what happened through all the players.

Gosh I read another thread on this and everyone was talking about Doyle or moving Welch in and Colbert to a starter! Jones did have some real problems being in the wrong gaps and he did get jerked early, But is the coaching staff that off base telling everyone he was the only LB that had a solid hold on the job to start the season? Maybe he just doesn't have the football aptitude to play MLB especially as that's the one to make the calls, or maybe he was just so psyched he made first game mistakes. But its hard to believe the coaches that were so high on him are going to throw the towel in after one game? Hope not

on paper he has been demoted

The QB hit the receiver for TD on a deep post pattern.

That's what happened.
