Jon - Recruiting Randle??

Jon,

According to this article, Iowa is a school Chasson Randle from Rock Island, IL is considering.

New Randle contender? Harvard, not Kansas

I am a coach and have seen Randle play a few times. He is a special basketball player (that may seem obvious by looking at the teams recruiting him). Beyond being Rock Island HS's all time leading scorer as a junior, he is a phenomenal passer, incredible teammate and is #1 in his class academically. The guy has all the tools needed to become a top tier Division 1 basketball player. Do you know how hard Iowa has gone after him?

Bruce Weber and Johnny Dawkins are two coaches I've seen at his games. I think a lot of schools are rolling out the big guns for him. My impression is he is a kid not looking to "get his" like other top recruits. Iowa has a unique opportunity to sell him on being a program changer, someone who is talked about for years to come. He is a kid that I can see staying in school for 4 years so he graduates, unlike the last NBA type player to come out of the Quad Cities - Ricky Davis. I'd love to know if you have any insight into the recruitment of Chasson Randle by Iowa.

My raw thought is that until Iowa lands a player of this caliber again, I won't be optimistic it's going to happen anytime soon.

Maybe I am completely wrong here, but I feel like the longer he waits the better chances that Iowa hears good news from Randle. He seems like someone who would like to be a program changer.

If he is as smart as they say he is, why would he want to go to Iowa? Unless he desperately wants to major in medicine or humanities, why would any top player in the midwest consider Iowa?

This isn't a slam on anyone, but the reality is that Iowa is a cellar dwellar now, and top players don't go to lousy teams.

I was being sarcastic when i said we should sign Zeller and Randle. They are both Top 100 guys and I agree with Jon - until this staff proves it can get a top 100 guys i am not even going to follow recruiting....it just ends in disappointment

Supposedly,Randle is interested in medical techology field, or medicine...so that could give Iowa a shot. Iowa is the closest school to home, which makes it easier for his parents to attend his games. Don Nelson is an Iowa HOFer,and is from Rock Island.
Iowa has the fancy new facility coming on line when Chasson will step on campus if we get him. He can be the player who turns the program around and become a Hawkeye legend. The new generation Ronnie Lester....SELL IT ,LICK!!

Derrick favors disagrees with you.

Kudos - this is optimism at its finest

One question - How does Don Nelson being from Rock Island matter at all?

Top 3 player in the nation out of high school last year.

Georgia Tech is not a lousy team - comparing them to Iowa is ridiculous. So ridiculous. I dont understand how Derrick Favors going to G Tech relates to Ghost saying no top midwest player would consider Iowa

Plus they have a history of recruiting top talent (Bosh, Jack, Marbury, etc)

OK, the Nellie connection is a bit of a reach...but maybe Lick gets Nellie to call him from the Golden State locker room, and remind him that Rock Island is Iowa Hawkeye Country!...at least Nellie is still a head coach in the NBA and most kids will have heard of the NBA.:)

Most kids probably don't know that Iowa still has a BB team.

Perhaps because he is an extremely bright kid with a sky-is-the-limit academic future AND has mentioned that he especially is interested in studying medical technology, looking to a possible career in medical engineering.

And of the most prestigious programs in medical technology (U of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Case-Mellon, Washington U-St Louis...) the U of Iowa is at the top of the list of those programs which are also serious Division 1 athletic programs...and easily the top choice among Midwest schools that play big-time basketball.

The U of Iowa has the largest teaching hospital IN THE WORLD. UIHC was one of the three sites of the landmark Genome Project. It is a huge facility in cancer research. It has billions of dollars worth of patents. It has embarked on a billion-dollar plus upgrading and expansion of UIHC that will increase its staff from a current 10,000 employee level to nearly double its staffing by 2016.

Perhaps none of this will matter in the end; it may well be that the kid in so enamored of running around in short pants bouncing a ball that he wants to extend adolescence into his 30s playing in the NBA: after all, that IS the choice of hoop stars who fall short of his rare combination of brains and athletic talent---OR he may follow the path of Bill Bradley et al and try to balance both, postponing (sometimes with fatal consequences) their post-sports careers. But it certainly is plausible to postulate that even if he hopes to pursue both futures he might decide that the U of Iowa Hawkeyes in combines great preparation for both..with the added advantage of being in his backyard.

The longer he waits to make his choice, most likely that is in Iowa's favor as he concludes that it is the best-suited to his academic interests and the Hawkeyes as a BT program would give him an opportunity to play college basketball at the highest level as well.

This assumes that every other school recruiting him has shi*** academics, which isnt true at all

I think the longer he waits the worse it is for Iowa. The longer he waits that more all of the big dogs keep sinking their teeth into him the harder it would be for him to choose Iowa.
