Jok's fast starts

Jok has started 7 games in a row now and has had fast starts in almost if not all of those games. I know for sure he scored our first basket in the last 2 games. He also scored a lot early in the first OSU game. I know he had some other quick starts but can't remember for sure which one's.

Fran needs to find a way to keep him involved as the game goes on. I'm not sure if he quits being aggressive after he misses a couple or what but he needs to keep firing. I think we would be a better offense with him forcing a couple bad shots a game rather than him not shooting much at all. What do you all think?

I agree he needs to stay aggressive. That can be said for the offense as a whole. Once this team gets behind a bit, they tend to stop firing away open looks instantly upon receiving the ball. They think too much instead of just letting it fly. That's one thing that always gets me yelling at the TV at least once during each game. If you are open, you have to always have the mentality of making the defense pay for giving the space. Basically it's about shooting with confidence. Something that only Uthoff has had for most of the season. Jok has shown glimpses the past couple of weeks, hopefully he starts to stay aggressive for a whole game. If he can do that, he could become a difference maker down the stretch.

And too many of the hawks who are supposed to take jump shots dont take them when they get open. Instead they hesitate and let the opponent's whole defense catch up.

If you work 20-25 seconds to get a good look take the shot and guys should be ready in the motion offense to crash the boards. Iowa usually has a low post guy and high screen guy and a guy running the baseline or cutting through the lane so this gives them 2-3 guys to rebound and there is usually a couple guards back to stop the break.

I also would like to see our shooters be even a couple feet beyond the arc and always stepping into their shot as they catch the ball. Too many times we have guys catching the ball as they go sideways or away from the basket which is hard for these not the greatest shooters in the world.

Watch Wisky and some other teams and tell me their perimeter players arent in a better shooting position for the most part vs the hawks. This is both on the players and the coaches

Looking at the NBA, one of the things that makes the Warriors so great this year is that every single guy on the team buys into the idea of passing up a good shot for a great shot, and will make that extra pass if a great shot is there. When we get down, we'll pass up good looks and make an extra pass, but that pass doesn't typically lead to a better shot than the one we had initially, if it leads to a shot at all (when it doesn't, that's when we get into those really long possessions where we don't seem to be doing anything at all).

You make a good point. That was basically what I meant. I actually like players making the extra pass when they are open if it's to an open post or to a better shooter that's also open. I just get mad when I see guys like Jok and Uthoff pass up open looks by holding onto the ball and allowing the defense to recover.

I think a lot of this is inherent in our offense and the fact that we dont feed the post nearly enough. Wisconsin, and Kaminsky in particular, but on an exhibition of how to play inside-out the other night. They feed the post religiously and their bigs are very good at then finding open guys on the perimeter for pretty much wide open 3's.

It won't surprise me if he scores 2 points in the 1st half and then gets 10 in the 2nd half tomorrow or at some point down the road. We have several guys that can score in double figures on any given night. I could be wrong of course...just have to wait and see. I'm just happy to see the improvement from last year and the confidence to take a shot on the 1st possession.

There's a good chance you're right on the small sample size. It's also possible he's still dialed in from the pre game shoot around. It sure seems like he's getting closer and closer to being a go to scorer though.

You are complete correct on this. I have been banging this drum for awhile now. Way too many stupid 17' jump shots. As a matter of fact I think Ogs problems are so between his ears right now that he simply comes off screens inside the 3 point line and takes that 2 point shot, cause he doesn't think he can hit the 3.

Agreed, and Wisconsin does a great job at displaying a 3 pt shooting motion on many catches with no intention of shooting. This does two things 1. Makes the defense get sick of sprinting to the shooter and 2. Prepares the shooter by having the preparation/mentality.

Agree with Knighthawk 100%%. Kaminsky is maybe the BEST ball handling, Passing 7 footer that's
EVER played in the BigTen. And obviously, he's a very good shooter, as well.

Dang it.......he's a smart player to boot.

At what point do you have to say oglesby is just an avg at best shooter? I mean we have almost 4 years of evidence, which is over 100 games now. I know he's an Iowa kid and everyone wants him to do well, but this "it's all in his head" stuff is old and ridiculous at this point. Not to mention it's painful watching him work screens on the baseline only to receive the ball and immediately pump fake whether he has a defender in his face or not. I'd be more than ok with Jok, Uthoff and others taking 3's over him.

I think he came out because he took a bad shot. I'm really wondering if that's why we shoot so bad. Always unsure of the shot they're taking.

If so, that's a good way to make shooters tentative. Shooters are going to take bad shots at times. This team doesn't need fearful/tentative shooters. Leave them in the game and explain later.

Take them out of the game for defensive breakdowns and stupid turnovers.

agree. he can't shoot and should not be playing. simple as that
