Jok at the 3?

I have noticed that Fran is targeting very few wings for this class. One would think with Marble leaving, that the 3 spot would be a priority. Instead it seems we are looking at PG, SG, and PF.

Does this mean that Fran thinks that Jok and Uthoff will be holding down the 3 spot for the next 2/3 years after Marble leaves?

Except that Marble isn't a 3. He's a 1/2.

Then who is our 3? White, Uthoff, Basabe?

I mean I know you don't have to start a true "3" wing, you can go 3 guards, etc. But one would think you'd want 6'6 6'7 slashers that can get to the rim, rebound and play D.

Any one of those three could play the 3.

And I wasn't discounting your theory. I was merely pointing out that Marble is a 1/2, not a 3. Jok could make a good 3. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if Fran were looking at Jok as a 2/3 for the reasons you mentioned.

I'd say Jok is a 2/3, Uthoff is a 3, White is a 3/4. Needless to say, we have some pretty good depth at the 3 depending on whose on the court.

When you look at how Fran continued to pursue pgs after Ulis opted for KY, it is pretty apparent that Fran felt he needed another pg in the program next year. That means he is probably pushing more sg minutes to Gesell, and that rolls downhill, with more sf minutes for Jok/Oglesby very likely. So yes, I think Jok will play some 3 when we go small....White is clearly a 4/3, and Uthoff might be a 3/4. While I wonder if Ellingson will be ready to contribute next year...he will clearly be a sg..a very narrow role player, at least early on. If you look at our guard rotation in 2014 it could be Gesell, Sapp, Oglesby ,Jok, Ellingson and maybe LaChance? That does not look very quick and athletic...hope we add a quick slasher type.

Jok spent quite a bit of time at the 3 while over in Europe and if I were to guess he will be fighting Uthoff for minutes at that spot at least initially but I can think of about 5 or 6 different lineups that "could" happen between start of practice and tourney time.

McCabe is going to be heavily involved at the 3 IMO. He lost 20 pounds for a reason. I think he's a respectable shooter and he can rebound. I'm hopeful that getting to the rim and his D have been upgraded with the weight loss and conditioning program he's been on since the off season started.

Anyway, Fran has said repeatedly we will use an 11 man rotation. McCabe is definitely in this rotation and the only place I can see him playing with our size and depth is the 3. All of this is simply IMO and a compilation of several different pieces of information found multiple places over the past few months.

I think Uthoff will start at the 3, White at 4 and Marble and Gessell playing both the 1 and 2. I think Uthoff slides to the 4 when he's a senior. Jok will back up the 2 and 3 maybe more minutes at the 3 and then start when Uthoff goes to the 4. Those are just my thoughts and they're not exactly scientific. I'm not very good at knowing where to use the talents of the players. I think Fran has recruited these players because they're able to play more than one position. It's hard to have problems with depth when the foul trouble comes in because when you can go 10 or 11 deep with almost all of them playing more than one position.

You bring up a very valid point. If he has truly lost 20 pounds he won't be able to bang inside like you'll need to do as a 4. He can't handle the ball like a 1 needs to and while his shooting is adequate, it's not good enough for a 2. The place he will be best suited for is at the 3.

Yes .. .. it's going to be a very interesting year.

Interesting and fun!!!!!!!

Wings/athleticism is always needed, but Iowa can't shoot a lick outside either, so getting guys that can knock down shots is huge at this point. If their reputations hold up, Uthoff, Jok and Ellingson can shoot.

Gesell will be a much better shooter this year and moving forward in his career, I still believe he was thinking on the floor way too much last year and will settle in nicely, especially after missing time with the stress reaction. Actually, I thought he played much better when he came back because he had to try and play slower and wasn't in such a hurry to make something happen.

One thing that intrigues me is where Jackson Forbes ends up, he is supposed to be able to shoot the ball well too.

No offense intended but if Fran plays Ogelsby at the SF spot, i will personally walk him over to the psych wing of the U of I hospital.

So for you that have seen Uthoff play, who is he the most similar to on the team? I have not seen him play.

Aaron White with a better 3 pt shot but less physical. For lack of a better example. But that's just from the PTL games I watched in person. Which is why I like him at the 3 rather than the 4 spot. He's quick enough and long enough to guard that position against most teams we would face.
