Johnny Orr

Johnny was a great coach. Even though he spent a number of years with the enemy, you have to have a lot of respect for the guy and what he accomplished.

My condolences to his family and Cyclone nation. I had several conversations with him when he would hang around (his) Johnny Orr's Sports Bar and Grill, after he had retired. Super nice guy and I used to look forward to seeing him when I lived in Ames. Truly a class act as far as I'm concerned.

I've never met anyone who didn't like Johnny Orr if I had I am sure I wouldn't want to meet them twice. A legend has passed for sure

I know ISU likes to claim him (and with justification), but I still first think of him as a Michigan man.

Besides Jeff Hornacek he is the reason I paid attention to ISU basketball as a kid. Definitely deserves some sort of tribute, "Johnny Orr Court at Hilton Coliseum". I'm not a cyclone fan so I do not know exactly how you would pay tribute.

Great coach and great guy. Sad day.

JD - I have just been informed that CryFan is shutting down for an hour between 5 and 6 to honor Coach Orr. Anyway, given that a substantial number of troglodytes will be without forum access during that hour, I am respectfully requesting that you preemptively ban ALL ISU fans from posting on HN and do not approve any new user registrations today.

I really liked his teams with Barry Stevens and Jeff Grayer. They were fun to watch when not playing the Hawks.....

He was a good coach and a good man.....

Johnny was a good man. As and Iowan I always felt like he was really just one of us. Loved how he could give almost anyone a hard time (looking at you Vital).

My wife is an ISU grad and found her crying looking at her phone. He was coach while she was in school. When they open the gates for him, he should hear, "heeeeeerrrrreeesss Johnny!!!!!

He had a winning record at all three school where he was the head coach, but he was way more successful at Michigan than at UMass or ISU. A great guy, funny man and respected coach. He'll be missed.

Young guy here...

How does the story go on how Johnny ends up at ISU after having national champion contending type teams at Mich??
