JO shoot the ball

I thought he passed on three 3s that he should have taken.

A big one is when he passed to White in the corner. Thats a good pass if White is the better shooter.

Im calling out JO but in a good way. A shooter has to shoot. JO is a big difference maker for this Iowa team. Really tough to beat Iowa if hes on because of how much the defense has to chase him. If he misses a couple then its not his night. However if he doesnt take a couple then we dont know if it was his night. If the defense see that he is passing up shots then they stop chasing him as much.

What do you guys think? Did he miss some looks or was it just me?

He missed a few looks but he was having a tough time getting space. The defense was right with him most of the way. I agree he should have taken a couple when he did have the look.

I get the impression if he misses his first one he automatically assumes he does not have his touch and will not shoot unless he is wide open. He passed on some open looks by making an extra pass, like you said to a worse shooter. Gesell was passing up on open looks as well.

He passed on a few. He shot faked a guy through the roof and thought for sure he would go up with his jumper and draw the contact, but didn't. Took one dribble and missed the 2pt'r.

I forgot all about that, and I was thinking the exact same thing when it happened. He did this in the Minnesota game as well. JO has shot 2 free throws so far this season, I do not understand why he doesn't try to draw the foul in those situations. In some cases he could be getting 3 free throws.

He also hit a two pointer the other time he did that move. When you get the respect as a three-point shooter that he's getting, that's an effective tool in the arsenal (just like the backcut he made at OSU). Can he draw fouls in those spots? Sometimes, sure. But it's not like taking the side dribble and two-pointer is a bad counter to his most-known skill.

He passed up some open ones that he probably should have taken. We needed him to take those shots because it seemed like for most of the game nothing was coming easy offensively.

Unless he has missed a couple already in a game and it looks like he's forcing it, I want him shooting the 3 anytime he is remotely open.

He was trying like hell to get open but couldn't. It's frustrating when the other team shuts down a 3 point shooter yet Iowa continues to let that cocky dude jack up shots at will.

He has the ability to throw off a defense without even making a shot. Shooters are a pain in the butt. I hope JO watches what that canadian did and learns as much as he can from it.

There's a reason that Stauskas is a favorite for B1G POY. I like JO and he can be a very valuable asset going forward. But Stauskas routinely plays like Gatens did for two weeks. Nobody could stop MG, no matter what they did, for those couple weeks. Stauskas plays at that level all the time. He's scored 15 or more in 12 games this year, including nine games of 20+. Duke has been the only team to really shut him down this year.

Ok, so he is 1 out of 2 with that move for a total of 2 points. The other option is to draw contact by moving to where that player is coming down, going up with his jump shot, and potentially getting 6 free throws.

Yup; JO is a good shooter; Stauskas is a great shooter (as well as quite athletic in that he can create space to take a shot). All you can do is hope he's "off", which he hasn't been, especially in B1G play.

It's why I hate him so much ... not personally, but in a, "you suck unless you play for Iowa" kind of way.

Shooters gotta shoot....I agree he was having a helluva time getting free....big difference last night, we couldn't stop ball, so that leads to penetration & kick outs for open three's, our guys couldn't do that, thus only 10 attempts to their 27 attempts....Michigan did a very nice job at sticking like glue on our shooters & not allowing the drives & dishes....i just wish we could've kept hammering inside like the 1st half...

You guys who are good at X & O things. What are a couple of things Fran could do to get JO a couple good shots when he comes in. We are such a different team when his scoring.

He gets open. He just passes on a couple a game he should shoot and they dont always find him when he is open.I dont think its a huge deal I just think its one of the things that needs to be fixed to be a really good team.

He was the only kid I feared in the ISU game. And I feared him plenty.

A lot of teams do double screens, and maybe Iowa does that also....I noticed one instance last night that JO was running baseline one direction and tried to shake his defender, and only got a single screen by Woody (I think), which usually works most of the time, so maybe we need another person down there to make sure the defender doesn't get through there......or, I've seen MSU, Duke, Syracuse, run the player back up the middle of the lane from the baseline, so the shooter ends up at the top of the key, using a double screen....I don't really have the answer, just an observation...

Oglewinkel does not / can not create his own shot. He is open when we have an inside game going or another player can take the focus away from him. If he's got a defender in his face then it's highly likely that someone is open if they were rolling to the bucket.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, this post would be titled "JO don't shoot the ball". He's very selective as to when he pulls the trigger, he seems keep his place in the pecking order. I don't see him taking 12-14 shots in a game this year. This is based on my expert analysis of watching the Iowa games, while remaining completely clueless as to what he's told in practice or during the games.
