Is the Jim Bartels that was killed in a car accident in Des Moines yesterday the same Jim Bartels that played for the Hawks in the early 90’s. The ages line up. Hope not.

The guy in the accident was 46. Jim came to Iowa in 1990. It says the guy is from Altoona, but I found a Jim Bartles that is 49 from Wisconsin that works for API Physical Therapy that looks like it could be him.

Bartles' Iowa career got off to a slow start, but he was one of several to benefit (on the court) from the Chris Street tragedy and he was a rotation mainstay by the end of his redshirt sophomore year. He missed the Wake Forest NCAA game due to illness and was sorely missed.

By his final two years he was a typical Tom Davis player. Surprisingly athletic, decent shooter, long arms and good anticipation on the press. He might have been Iowa’s alltime steals leader when he left. Wisconsin's recent grad Brevin Pritzl could be a reasonable modern day comp.
