Jewell question...

Ok he had a great freshman season I understand. However, had a clown friend of mine...yes even they need friends. He said why should ISU be so fearful of him, he just played in mop up duty behind Greene??? I really didn't know how to answer him other then all B10 visitors have been very impressed with him. Any other reasons I should use with him?

Just tell him to wait until Saturday and he'll realize why they should be fearful of him. I think of him as a slightly smaller, yet faster Shonne Greene. Not afraid to hit a guy in the secondary and run him over and finish for a TD.

Then when you see him again say "That's why you should have been fearful of him".

No. Let him wait til Saturday evening and figure it out for himself.

I dont remember for sure which game but I think it was Indiana in 2008 that Jewell played early and got couple TDs and alot of yards. It was Indiana but....

How about we all wait and see how he performs in 'real' action on Saturday. The guy hasn't played a game in almost 2 years. I am excited to see how he does, but thankfully, the Hawks have a great starter in Robinson.

Agree to say wait til Saturday, but to say all Hampton played was mop-up duty is not true. He saw a lot of first half action and he performed very well as a true freshman. Is he going to go for 1800 yards and a Doak Walker award, probably not, but backing up Greene should not be used to somehow slight the guy.

I'd say that he shouldn't be worried about Hampton. Arob proved worthy enough one year ago - focus on that alone.....

i'd say he should absolutely be worried about hampton coming back. IF for NOTHING else, it gives us a second solid running back to hand the ball off too. both robinson and hampton will be pretty fresh throughout the game and will help to open up the passing game even more than if we only had one solid back(sorry paki).

but i do believe hampton will be the man this year

In a word, vision.

Jewell has great vision and the burst to be able to make it pay dividends. In his first action against Maine he blew me away. In later games he wasn't AS impressive and I got the impression he had been "coached up" a little too much and was not running instinctively. I think he will impress tomorrow with this acceleration through the hole compared to A-rob.

Hampton has been practicing against the best defensive line in the nation and has been very impressive. He is a beast and he is hungry. Even a reserved Coach K has said he is very impressive. Do you think these people are just idiots that don't know a thing about football?

Agree, just wait till around 5:30 after your friend is mending his heart back together from the beating they just took inside Kinnick.

This.

He is faster than ARob and has greater cutback ability. IMO.

When the Big 10 NW was at the practice they were absolutley amazed by him. I watched every episode of every team they visitied an they did not get as giddy about any other running back as they did Jewell.

JH's burst is better now after the surgery than it was before. He's stronger and looks faster. Reminds me a little of Freddy Russel, but Jewel runs with more anger.

I agree about the Fred Russell comparison, just bigger and powerful. When I watched him in person, he just has that hungry drive to him. He runs with an attitude and it shows and i love that! Going against the top ranked line in the country definitely helps!

So what is everyone's expectations of Jewel's stat line tomorrow? 10 carries 50 yards? 18 carries 100 yards? I can't wait to see him play again, but I think I have considerably lower expectations than some of you on here.

When somebody claims that a guy receives "mop up duty" the implication is that he doesn't enter the game until late. Hampton, quite to the contrary, usually entered games EARLY. The issue there is that we needed somebody to spell Greene early in the season until he got his conditioning to a level where he could be effective through 4 quarters.

Thus, Hampton saw plenty of reps early in the game too ... and yet he still averaged over 5 yards per carry.

Furthermore, Hampton found the endzone 7 times through the season. That's pretty impressive for a TR FR who is only running in a backup capacity!

Lastly, Hampton got mentored by Greene. In other words, he learned from one of the best!
