Jewel headed to...

I'm glad he is moving closer to home and will be in a league that he will dominate single-handedly. But at the same time I'm a UNI fan also so I hope this isn't the case.

Can somebody recap why he's transferring? I know he blew two ACLs while here but did he get in trouble?

Speculation is that he refused a drug test right around the time DJK got busted. It was a "mutual agreement" between him and KF that he was going to transfer.

Most hyped 400 yard rushing back in Iowa history.

Perhaps, but that isn't his fault. Go back and watch some of those 2008 games and try convincing yourself that as a true freshman he wasn't really really good.

He had a bright future. Injuries intervened, and now he's leaving. Good luck to him.

Injuries intervened, but they aren't why he left. He was very talented, making it even more sad when he takes that talent for granted and throws it away.

Good luck to him and hope he succeeds. I think everyone involved knew with two repaired knees, he would face an unhill struggle in the Big 10. Especially for a back that had a game based on speed and cutting ability.

Hampton is the epitome of over-hyped. Doesn't mean he wasn't/could-have-been a great player, but almost all of his yardage in 2008 came against weak competition and/or late in games. He was never the featured back, where he could demonstrate an ability to withstand 20 - 30 carries a game.

However, I hope he does well at Southern Illinois.

I looked very forward to his return last yr. Although, unfortunately it ended way too soon, I will never forget, on a pass protection play, he CLEANLY knocking a blitzing linebacker off his feet onto his A$$. Not only just that, the linebacker stayed on the ground and I believe had to take some plays off. Can't recall game/player. Jewel's strengt/power on that play amazed me. I regret to see his departure. Best wishes, hope to see u on Sundays.

That's the play that sticks out in my mind as well. Absolutely trucked the linebacker. Was excited for a full season with him.

Yeah, a 600-yard back (Coker) is WAY better than a 400-yard back (both true freshman)

Seriously (not aiming this directly at you, Mike), over-hyped/overrated don't apply to Hampton. He really could have been that good, and injuries prevented that from happening (not at all unlike what happened to Jermelle Lewis). That doesn't mean he was overrated. That kind of term applies when a guy had all the opportunities in the world and never lived up to the hype.

He had promise & could have been quite special but one never really knows until playing the year as a starter or getting the majority of the plays. Two points.

1) Remember Iowa had quite a nice & productive O-line that particular year. They opened some nice holes for Green & Hampton.
2) Remember that often when Hampton came in the game, the defense has been on the field for a while & may have been tired at times. Hampton comes in with fresh legs which could attribute to some of his success.

So, one never really knows without know how he would have performed the year after Green left.
