Jet sweep fake

Bottom line, it's a really nice play that left the Purdue DE totally confused. I think part of that was set up by prior playaction plays to. The DE watched Parker, and that froze him a split second and then he went after CJ and Weisman ran right by him. He never made a step towards Weisman until he was gone.

I would agree. I think I posted my comment at the bottom of that story, but it seems ok to post it here as well.

Really poor technique by the BSDE on that jet play. He had help on the outside so his steps should have been to step down (as Scherff stepped inside) and close that gaping hole first. If nothing else that play muddied his read and confused him enough, disallowing him to play fast and we got the inside zone cut behind his poor run fit.

Now that we are 5 games in and have established tendencies for the opposition, this is the time to break out the counters, the double move on the WR short out pattern (make it an out and up), the QB keepers on zone reads, etc.

Spider, we have the same tendencies pretty much year to year. Granted GD is a little different than KOK.

I have been screaming for counter plays for years, any type of play so that we can burn the opposition once in a while and not have such 95% tendencies.

Watch teams flow to the direction the Iowa QB turns right after the snap. That is all ISU does on defense is sell out because they know there is little chance we run a counter the other direction.

KF is the opposite of Hayden Fry in this respect.

Quit running it with MW at tailback. It had some success but because of his lack of speed, a potential huge play turned into a 9 yard run.

How does it work that there is no fullback depth whatsoever and MW is still a tailback? How is it that Vandeberg plays over Powell? Or that McCann played over Banks? Or Brodell over DJK?

Name the common denominator.

Maybe its that if you don't execute, you don't know the play book, You show up late for team meeting. You set no matter how much talent you have. Maybe

Not true for McCann/Banks. If Banks was limited to knowing only five plays, that was more effective than McCann's 100.

Brodell/DJK. I'll give that to you. If DJK was such an asshat, Kirfer should have just shown him the door. Kirfer clearly couldn't handle DJK's personality and DJK failed to live up to his end of the bargain.

Weisman still a tailback despite the heavy RB depth and lack of fullback depth? This coaching decision makes no sense. None.

Vandeberg playing when Powell, T. Smith, or Parker on the bench? Are you crapping me? Who cares if the kid never misses class. He's not in the same league as any of these guys.

Three of these issues are just shiddy coaching moves. DJK might be the outlier. Maybe. On the other hand, maybe a 55 year old $4 million per year coach could have handled it better than a 20 year old numbskull.

I really think Vandeberg is way ahead of Powell and Parker at knowing his job. Not Smith. Powell is gaining and I think they are using Parker as much as he can. I love the kid but he has to know his job. He will be fine just takes a little time. But 94 yds in four touches is pretty cool

Seriously, though . . . why doesn't Kirfer move Weisman back to fullback? He can still tote the rock from there. He could put him in the backfield with JC or LD. I just don't understand. MW is obviously not a true tailback. Let LD back up JC and learn the position, sprinkled in with some runs and blocking situations to learn the ropes.

I agree with you I would put him a Fullback too. I think it would make Defenses have more to think about as well. But Im not one to think I know more than the Coach. He must think what he is doing is right for the team.

i realize this isn't an apple to apple comparison, parker isn't going to be Percy Harvin, but it is the same sort of thought process in terms of playcalling.
