SMITH TO DEPART IOWA FOOTBALL PROGRAM

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz announced Friday that wide receiver Jerminic Smithwill no longer be a member of the Hawkeye football program.

"We have mutually agreed that at this point it is in everyone’s best interest that Jerminic starts a new chapter in his collegiate career. We wish him success moving forward," said Ferentz.

Smith (6-foot-1, 187 pounds) is a native of Garland, Texas (South Garland HS).

Well, not great news for depth/experience at the thinnest position, but it does create opportunity for the younger guys to step up. I wish Jerminic the best going forward but I must admit I didn't see a lot to show me he was on the way to being a significant contributor. Trial by fire for the incoming and younger existing guys. whew...

Yeah seldom does it end well once the academic issue gets brought up... Figured it was a long shot he'd be back when he was suspended for that. More snaps for the new Smith coming in.

Hard to miss a guy who dropped every other ball thrown to him. He's shown little to nothing in 2 years.

DD actually produced his freshman year........unless JS ends up in prison I don't think they have much in common.
I was just going off of they both played early on with some success. They presumably should have had their better days ahead and yet not so much...

Imagine if Vandenberg didn't get hurt last year. This would be the worst position group on paper in the history of college football not counting ISU.

Well least experienced anyway... Hope it won't end up worst when it's all said and done but it does remain to be seen. QB play will have a tad to do with that too and we aren't sure what we have there either.

I'll take quality depth that's one player less, over...well, you can finish the sentence. Wish the kid well, but he didn't look to be much of a contributor. Not a big loss.

I imagine in about 2-3 years we'll say in conversation, "Who was that guy who was a wide receiver who, I think, was a starter, and then he left the team for some reason? Wasn't he pretty good, or am I thinking about somebody else? I wonder what happened to that guy?" Something like that.

As Jerminic stood on the tarmac, on a foggy, misty night, he said to Coach Ferentz as he departed, "We'll always have Illinois." And then he drifted off into the darkness.

Don't worry, Texas Tech has a good relationship with some jucos down there they can get him ready to play reall soon.

J. Smith did show a few flashes of being a solid college WR but the key word there is few. It was disappointing that he wasn't able to emerge after Vandeburg's injury after somewhat capably filling in for T. Smith the year before. I would have liked to have thought that J. Smith could possibly have a bounce back Junior year, but I certainly wouldn't have counted on it. When I think of the WR's that have played well at Iowa in the past decade or so, I feel like you can kind of tell pretty early on when they play if they'll be solid contributors. This hurts from an experience and depth standpoint, but maybe someone like Devonte Young, Nick Easley, or our new favorite WR Brandon Smith can step up and take the spot.
