The school has called a meeting of all the boys interested in playing BBall at Valley next year at 3:30 today. I assume that is to introduce the coach.

This is great for Valley but kind of bummed he won't be involved with Iowa in any fashion. Although I may get an opportunity to meet him and possibly work for him soon. Because I teach at one of Valley's middle schools, I am familar with the kids he will be coaching. I have also been a volunteer assistant basketball coach for 4 years and hope to get the same position on his staff. Congrats to Jeff!

A little head scratcher here. Think Jeff will be an excellent coach but no experience actually running a program, so there will be a huge learning curve for him. Wish him well at Valley.

I don't Jeff Horner personally, although we both played HSBB at Mason City, so take this for what it's worth-Jeff's father is a legendary coach, Jeff is a hard worker and smart kid, so he will not be as green as some equally talented player without the coaching history in the family. I think this is a smart move on Jeff's part, since it could be an effective stepping stone for what he clearly wants to do, coach D1 college BB.

I think it's a great move for Jeff, he has to earn his coaching stripes as it were. Valley is a solid program, he needs to start his coaching career somewhere. I think you will see him move up as he atains success.
Maybe in 20 years he will be on Iowa's short list? Who knows maybe before that?

He'll be fine. Forgot about his dad coaching, what an advantage for a new coach to have 20+ year of coaching experience a phone call away.

He will be fine. Valley has a ton of talent coming in their current freshmen, 8th and 7th grade classes. He knows what he is stepping in to. Good luck, Jeff.

Makes sense why FM wasn't naming him. My theory is that FM offered him the position but Horner already had the iron in the fire with the hc gig, and allowed Horner to wait to hear back. If Horner hadn't gotten it, FM would have made him the GA. Also would explain why everyone was so upset when the leak came out a few weeks ago that FM had chosen him. All were concerned it might jeopardize his chances at WDMV. Again, just theorizing here. FM was also aware the GA position wouldn't be hard to fill, and so he could take his time to wait on JH without hurting the team. In any event, congrats to Jeff. Hope you do well at WDMV.
