Jarrod Uthoff - How do you rate him to date?

Interested in thoughts related to Jarrod's contribution so far.

I really expected that he would be playing more minutes. Hoping he can gain some strength in the off season and step it up.

He needs to add 10-15 lbs, get stronger and play better D but he's flashed enough talent for me to think he's going to be very good by his senior year.

I rate him as a guy that has great length and good natural talent, but just not quite ready for prime-time after sitting out the last 2 years. Needs to add some bulk and get more mentally tough....both of which should come with age and experience. I fully expect a first or second team all-big ten type season by his senior year.

Based on what we saw in the out of conference schedule, I guess I expected he would be contributing more at this point. Obviously, the staff is seeing something (or not seeing something) that has not resulted in more minutes. He has the tools and the athleticism to be a really good player. It looks like he needs to add some strength and perhaps some weight so he's not getting knocked around down low so much. He looks to be taller than the 6-9 on the official Iowa roster; I'm guessing in some regards he's sort of like Woody in that his development is slowed a bit as a "big" man.

I would look for him to be more of a contributor next year as he gains experience in Fran's system and as he gets more time in the rotation with Mike, Aaron and Woody.

Rate him as imcomplete. He is a little over halfway through his first season of college basketball.

He definitely has to add weight/get stronger. There's plenty of skill there, but he plays too much of a finesse game right now to really make an impact in the conference.

He has exceeded my expectations for the season as a whole. The flashes of greatness he has shown have really impressed me. I don't think a guy playing his first season of college basketball is immune to down nights, but he is and will be a key factor going forward for this team.

He's playing his 1st year of D-1 basketball. He is a good player and has 10 more games to improve before they become really meaningful. He's a guy that I believe will be a tremendous asset in the NCAA Tournament. He's still not comfortable with how physical it is in the Big 10. It is is extremely unlikely the play will be as physical in the NCAA Tournament. I anticipate noticeable improvement next year...especially in conference.

I should add that Woodbury, Gesell and Clemmons are all true sophomores. They will also improve over the next 10 games and be much improved next year IMO. A lot of improvement often takes place between the sophomore and junior year.

He is the same as I saw in high school. He is soft. He has skills, but he has to get much stronger and tougher.

If he can add even 10 pounds in the off-season, it will go a long way. I think he'll be a very good player. Right now, his lack of mass makes him tweener.

Good enough to look great vs. non-conference foes. Just not ready for conference play. Wouldn't give him more minutes unless we play a team where he matches up well.

We've got to be careful, though. What happens is Doyle sees these string bean basketball players waltzing around campus and he gets in their faces and then next thing you know they get too bulked up. Recall that Basabe put on some weight in one offseason and he lost a step and hurt his production pretty badly. When you've got a guy like Doyle around, you need to be very careful because anyone in his general vicinity just puts on serious mass.

I heard that if Doyle looks at you, you put on 5 pounds of muscle mass. I kid. Maybe.

Exceeded my expectations thus far by a lot. He's our 3rd leading scorer in his first year of D-1 basketball and doesn't get near the minutes that our leading 2 scorers get. I'm not sure what the expectations were for him that people are disappointed by, but he's solid in my book with a much higher ceiling then I expected before I saw him play this year.

So why does he go down low? Does he like to get blocked? Like to get a jump ball? I'm guessing he's frustrated with his outside shot, but he's never gonna be anything other than a 3 (he'd have to put on a lot of muscle, and learn some post moves). Put on some muscle and keep practicing the jump shot, Jarrod.

Mainly this. If he had a consistent 3 all he could be lethal, strength and girth or no.

He hits the 3 at a better clip then anyone else on the team (at least percentage wise). I'm not saying it's consistent, but it's not like he can't make that shot. He just isn't confident yet in anything and plays within the offense and doesn't force up shots like some others. IMO.
