James Daniels Starting at Center

At press conference and Iowa sports info announced the change on the depth chart. Daniels will open at center with Sean Welsh at right guard. The of the front remains the same - Cole Croston at LT, Boone Myers at LG and Ike Boettger at RT.

Lot's of really good centers and offensive interior linemen in the Big Ten right now. Offensive tackles not so much. This seems to be a particularly weak year in the Big Ten for offensive tackles at least going in.

I agree with you evening.. I hope they quit shuffling the guys around. Turn them loose and let's go. Daniels won't be perfect or near what Blythe was during his SR yr it just don't work that way. But Welsh did great at guard last yr so I think the running game will be awesome. Its pass protection that has me a bit nervous.

The only reason they shuffled at Center was injuries. Daniels missed spring ball, so Welsh got the bulk of the snaps, and that led to the staff to plan on Welsh starting in the fall.

Then Welsh missed a bunch of August camp, forcing Daniels to take the bulk of the snaps.

Daniels will likely be a 3 year starter at center, following Blythe and James Ferentz. It will be pretty incredible that we'll have 9 years of Iowa football with really just 3 centers (and a smidge of Tommy Gaul).
