James Cleveland - NFL

Right, because guys can't decide they want to do something other than pro football? Sure glad that Nile Kinnick guy ditched politics for pro football......oh wait, he didn't.

Strange retort.

All I can find through google searches are articles mentioning him getting cut. Can't find anything noting that Hinkel was later resigned to a practice squad and then retired/quit. Again, not saying it didn't happen, just seems very strange that a guy like Ed Hinkel quit an NFL team before his rookie year.

Uh, that doesn't make much sense. Anyway, a person can quit football, but why would they after they have probably spent half of their life to that point (or more) with football as a major aspect in their life. You may not understand this, but playing football in college is a major sacrifice and you have to love the game to do it. So, if you love playing the game that much, I have a tough time believing that you would give it up to go sell insurance or be a middle manager somewhere. If you can provide some evidence that he 1) was going to make the team and 2) decided to quit anyway, I'd love to see it. I only know of one person that has ever been in that position (Eric Crouch) and that was a major story.

It is entirely possible that his decision to sell drugs (pretty heavy stuff, if I recall correctly) out of his UI dorm room ends up helping him get to the NFL.
...
Cleveland could be a great kid who made a terrible mistake when he was 19, and I hope this is the case. This post isn't about what kind of person he is, just that a really bad decision could end up having a fortunate outcome.

I think it's ridiculous we get all these college kids addicted to opiate medications, and then wonder why they continue to use them. I'd like to know if he'd been prescribed these pills before and what they were prescribed for. These drugs are incredibly dangerous and incredibly addictive.

The Iowa Board of Pharmacy recently unanimously recommended legalizing medical marijuana for this very reason. It's not addictive, it's not going to kill you, and it doesn't come from the same plant as heroin. Learn more at Iowa Patients for Medical Marijuana's website or facebook.

Fine, maybe he wouldn't have stuck with Indy. But he could have made a roster SOMEWHERE in the league. And apparently he chose not to pursue that.

My point about Kinnick was that he voluntarily passed up playing pro ball, when he was sure to be the top pick in the draft (even if that didn't mean quite as much money was flowing into his pocket as it would these days). My point was that there are guys who give up because they are ready to move on in their life. They don't all quit just because they can't hack it anymore.

Agreed. It actually looks like we would have been drafted and even then would have stuck with the Ravens, had he not broken his arm. They (some article) said he ran a surprisingly fast 40 time at the combine and had teams targeting him.
