Jake Rudocks father tonight..."He is going to IOWA"

They are really melting down over there this morning over this. They're posting stuff like how Jake is throwing his career away and how Jake must not want to play in the NFL. They also apparently have been given the wrong info regarding our QB status as most of them think he won't even get a chance to play until he is a JR. I guess they don't realize there are things called red shirts and that Jake's biggest competition leaves in two years meaning he will get a chance to take over his SO year. Anyway, most of them are idiots down there. I hope they don't start harassing Jake and his family over all of this.

You ought to tell those fans to take a closer look at their NFL production. They churn out running backs, wideouts, tight ends, and defensive players like crazy. Quarterbacks? Not so much. I believe Dorsey was the last one to get drafted, and he's done nothing. They don't have any better of an NFL pedigree at quarterback than we do. And we have a better med school, which seems to be pretty important to Rudock.

There's also the question of coaching continuity. Rudock has no idea if the coaches at Miami will remain there after 3 years. At Iowa, he can be pretty certain that Ferentz and Co will still be there ... that MATTERS to recruits.

Furthermore, Iowa's group of QBs currently has GREAT CHEMISTRY despite there being a very heated competition for the top QB spot. That has to be attractive because he knows that there will be quality guys pushing eachother ... but that the meeting room will be full of guys who are out there to help eachother out.

As for being a program of relevance, Iowa has enjoyed much greater success in recent history than Miami. Furthermore, the ACC has been battling national perception EVEN MORE than the Big 10.

Most importantly, as tm3308 already noted, Iowa has a better med school anyhow. And, to go along with that, Ferentz is also a coach who has a great reputation for encouraging his players to push themselves in the classroom too. You do not see Iowa players getting steered away from their academic aspirations ... and I really think that SHOULD matter to the prospective student-athletes (and their parents)!

For another day or so before the free trial ends. I've been conversing with some of them over there tonight. Some have been OK but there are a few that saw things like "Jake is ruining his life" and "I feel sorry for his family". They seem to have a less that flattering attitude toward Iowa.

You should remind them that it's IOWA, not IDAHO. Most of them probably can't find either state on a map.

Most of them couldn't find Ft. Lauderdale. Its amazing the difference in cultures. I love the cuban heritage down here, but there is an unemployment rate of over 22%. Don't make a wrong turn or it may be your last.

I had a presumptuous post yesterday where I thought maybe his dad was trying to influence him on where to go based on his ties with Miami U. Perhaps this is quite the opposite. Sounds like Golden keeps coming back hoping his dad will be an influence, but papa sounds quite solidly behind his son's choice.
I apologize for jumping to conclusions, I think I've heard of too many recruits whose parents are shopping them around. It sounds here as if Jake was open to go wherever he chose and his parents would stand behind him.
Great choice, great kid. Just the kind of recruit the Cap'n loves to have.
I look forward to see what this kid can do on the field!

Anybody else losing respect for Al Golden? I got the vibe from the article that the family almost had to come out and reaffirm Jakes committment to Iowa in order for Golden to back off.

Golden is desperate, Miami's class is being pillaged by other schools. You can't fault Golden for trying to flip kids commitments to Miami, that's his job. All coaches recruit verbally committed players, some just more aggressively than others.....

Just for the record, Jakes dad is 120% behind Jake coming to Iowa even though he is a UM fan. This family is what we should all look to as a solid, inspirational, loving, and supportive family. Jakes dad is unreal and one of the most intelligent people I have ever met. We are not talking about a player deperate to get to a name college. We are talking about a "Nile Kinnick" level kid and family. His dad could have easily swayed him to UM, but he has total respect for what he saw at Iowa. This my friends is a great story, and there is more to come, I promise you.

Its obvious Rudock has been solid with Iowa and has not wanted to visit Miami. Golden should have backed off. I get that his class is decimated but leave kids the heck alone if they are set on a school.

I cant fault him for trying to flip kids commitments, but he can be faulted for pestering a player until he has to go public with how solid of a commit he is.

Well then I would really like Jake to know that if he has a Heisman Trophy in him and he is willing to put in the time and effort it takes. I will support him to the core to become Iowa's second winner of the Heisman Trophy.

Not to split hairs, cause you are totally correct of their recent production of churning out NFL qb's, but a few years (well almost decades now) back, they spit 'em out quite regularly, like Tarretta (Heisman -yes, NFL, meeh) and Kosar as well as Jim Kelly and several others.

Beyond that though - Thank You Jake and the Rudock family for sticking with us. We look forward to getting to know/show you!

I recently discussed this in another thread. IIRC, Torretta was the only "big name" QB they've had in the last 20 years. They are the "Notre Dame" of quarterback production: once very good/great, now completely irrelevant.

FWIW... Jim Kelly is in NFL HOF and Bernie Kosar took Browns to several AFC Championship games, never to quite get past our beloved Broncos. Torretta, was more of a Heisman winner bust. But, yeah, those guys played in the NFL in the 80's and early 90's. Besides, we've agreed u of Miami basically sux.
