Izzo knew he couldn't afford a T

Why didn't Fran? It was obvious that this was going to be a slugfest and the teams were pretty evenly matched. I wouldn't be surprised if you asked Izzo at Halftime what he thought would happen he would say, "OT, going to come down to a buzzer beater".

In a game where everyone knows its going down to the wire, our coach is the only one that feels like throwing 2 points away for essentially nothing (they didn't call another travel after the first obvious one). Think the refs are done with Fran, he needs to adjust accordingly.

Izzo knew the zebras wouldn't give him a T.

Fran could learn some things from Izzo, among them knowing when and where (in or near the box) to wildly swing your arms in anger, not to stare down an official and when you show dissent with a call, do it with a smirky smile of incredulity, not a red mad face.

Starting to think this team is mentally weak because of it's head coach. Sure Izzo wanted to freak out as bad as Fran did. But he didn't. And look at which team hung in there and won the game.

Puh-lease...the two points are so blatantly overblown. How many possessions are in a basketball game? If you want to scrutinize the coach for the T and the free throws then give back the two points on the layup. But see, people want a scape goat and it is easy to point fingers at the coach or the officials. Regardless, too many empty possessions. As usual, too much dribbling without a purpose in the half court, odd lineup rotations, and very little Gabe or Jared in the second half.

^^^ Because Izzo had Fran right where he wanted him ^^^ The game was back and forth and MSU was mentally up to & for the challenge down the stretch...

Izzo knew no one would give him a technical. I think he's gotten one in the last 5 years, and we can all agree he works officials as much as anyone. Fran does enough to get a technical and he gets one, Izzo does enough to get a technical and he doesn't get one.

The technical is overblown. It's not like the Wisconsin one where that one was obviously a game changer. Last night's wasn't a big deal at all.

With that said, Fran yells at the refs with such anger that he's more likely to get T'd up than other coaches. Izzo goes out of the box too but he doesn't look like he's about to punch a ref. There is the difference.

You make a good point here. I remember going into a media timeout Izzo went after an official but he had a very humble look to him and he appeared to be almost begging. Hard to T up a guy when he is slouched and not being in your face.

As much as I dislike Izzo and the way he coaches his players to hack, foul and do everything to gain an advantage, I totally respect the way he is able to dissent from calls or non-calls, sometimes in anger, to cajole/pressure the refs, to communicate his unhappiness with them, but in a way that rarely earns him a T. He knows the line and rarely crosses it.

Beilein, too, went ballistic during the Michigan-Michigan State game but most of his outbursts were directed towards the floor or to no one in particular. He rarely went out of the box or went after officials directly and did not get the T.

There is an art to making your voice heard with officials. Fran hasn't mastered it yet. I do think part of his problem is his mad face. He could learn from both Michigan coaches.

And what is up with kicking the folder/clipboard off of the scores table? Poor guy in the purple sweater looked terrified. It's just petulant and childish behavior that accomplishes nothing. Don't get it.

Izzo should have been T'd up for getting in the face of a ref waaaay outside of the box right after fran got one for being outside of the box.

Did anybody hear Bilas say that Iowa fans (who were booing about 2 minutes after Fran's T) had a point to be mad, as Fran was T'd up for being "too far out of the coaches box" and then Izzo was past the box and on the floor towards Iowa's end? Double standard with officials in this league, especially when the Color guy points it out. They didn't elaborate on it, but Bilas made the point pretty clear.

That guy was just mad because he got his nacho spilled all over him.

Yep. It's a total double standard. Fran goes off on the refs at Wisconsin and gets tossed from the game and fined. Izzo does practically the same thing in the game against OSU and doesn't even get T'd up once. Just like last night - Fran goes out of the box and gets T'd up. Izzo goes out of the box shortly thereafter, and does not. I am 110% fed up with this horsecrap favoritism that Big 10 "officials" show to certain coaches.

Somebody needs to put a lid on Fran. I love his program and what he has brought to the Iowa fans, anyone in that arena last night has to agree Carver hasn't been that loud in probably over a decade. But to those who say why scrutinize or scapegoat Fran over just 2 points, you have to ask yourself why simply give 2 freethrows to a top ten team in a dog fight like this? The refs are going to miss their calls, the players are going to make their mistakes that cost us points, but why simply give the opponent two uncontested shots on the goal? Really? I think by now Fran needs to put a lid on whatever language he is using to get his point across, and channel that energy on coaching our boys to play some good tough big ten basketball. Stop giving away points to teams like MSU and Vadgers. And as a PS, Fran (as well as everyone else in that arena) was right to be miffed by that call, appling picked up his dribble at the 3 point line- watch the replay on espn.com. How bout having those 2 points back also?

When and why would the refs give Izzo a T no matter what he does......

Izzo is a master at working the refs. Fran, an apprentice. Fran will learn with time. You can get their attention without giving away games.
