First off, i thought it was a very competitive 30 minutes. I felt like the team was prepared for the game and got off to a great start in both halves. Things seem to flow better when you are making shots.
UNI shot the tremendously well. I thought we did a better job on challenging 3 point shots, but still not good enough. I like the 4 out offense that UNI runs with those shooters. It is tough to defend, but we made some great adjustments to defending it. UNI has a nice team and does not make a ton of mistakes. Very solid fundamentally.
Officiating. Poor at best. They called it tight from the get go, and then just lost control of it. In the first half both benches were noticeably upset with calls. I would love to hear there explanation of things and watch the tape with them to hear them explain what they saw.
I have watched a ton of basketball at all levels over the years and i have never seen a bench technical and a technical on the head coach called on the same play. Never. Now i am sure it has happened somewhere. I have never seen 3 technicals called in 19 seconds with no squirmish between the 2 teams. My opinion is that there should have been 1 T called on Fran and that is it. I think it is ego coming out after that. I did not see where the ball went when McCabe slapped it down, but his expression/didnt say anything didnt deserve a T. But the Refs had lost control at that point and had to do something. Fran's 2nd T had no bearing on the outcome. It was going to happen at some point.
4 T's is not acceptable. Coach Francis and McCabe can not get those T's in that situation. Veteran officials give Fran his first T, tell him that he made his point and it is done, tells him to control his bench and move on. these guys did not do that. As i stated last night, the refs did not lose us the game. however they strongly influenced it.
The team stats from last night are absolutely mindboggling. I've never seen anything like it.
Marble was great. I think we should have run a bunch of clear outs for him. With the refs calling things that tight UNI would have fouled him every time. Else Fran would have been booted even earlier! He needs to play more minutes. find a way to rotate him to a wing and back up point.
I am really disappointed in Gatens. Where was he when we needed someone to step up and lead this team in the last 10 minutes? I'm tired of hearing how everyone game plans around him. So what! Great players find a way to get things done. They get themsleves open, get their teammates a great look, get a big rebound, defensive stop, something. I just dont see it from him. Honest questions, what does Gatens do to make his teammates better?
Everything i hear about him, it sounds as if he is a quality young man. I feel bad for him for enduring what he has had to at Iowa. He grew up dreaming of playing for the Hawks and he is stuck in a 4 year swing of some of the worst basketball in hawkeye history. Maybe my expectations are too high for him
