ITT....help me make up my mind about KF

I'm guessing you're response would be that NO good coach would come to Iowa, so I won't bother listing names. But it sounds like you're suggesting we stick with KF, through thick and thin, no matter how bad it gets?

I'm pretty sure any number of coaches could post 7-5 records here. Or do better than 2-2 against N. Illinois, ISU, UNI, and CMU. Especially when 3 of those games are at home.

What makes a good coach? Who are the good coaches to consider? I didn't say stick with KF no matter what. You assumed that and you know what they say about assuming. I'm sticking with him right now because of the coaching changes, the player attrition, injuries etc... I hold the right to change my mind any time in the future whether short-term or long-term. Give me a list and I'll give my opinion if I believe a coach would come here.

As of today, the guy is 4 games better than Fitz from the beginning of Fitz's 2006 tenure to the present. And Fitz was in his early 30's and way over his head when he started (on no notice after the death of his mentor), leading him to a disastrous 4-8 opening campaign, while Ferentz at that point was well into his tenure. Fitz has rigid academic guidelines, terrible facilities and a non-existent fanbase for his program. And Ferentz has managed to average less than 1 win per season more than him (even including Fitz's disastrous 2006 season). Northwestern has had a ton of QB injuries, but save for a few hiccups, they have generally had a backup ready to play, whereas Ferentz's starter often looks like a backup.

Bielema is another coach that pains me to compare to Kurt. Bielema has been to two consecutive Rose Bowls and has actually managed to beat some good Ohio State teams. He has a bad team this year, but two straight Rose Bowls should buy him some goodwill. The utter lack of preparation for the fake punt in 2010 (dare I say it was a Hayden-esque call by Bert) sent this program into an unstoppable tail spin.

Nice guy, seems to like Iowa (at least the paychecks), but a marginal game day coach and almost always produces teams with some glaring deficiencies that good coaches exploit the crap out of. Unfortunately, the nice guys who would play Kurt's style of ball in terms of keeping games close (Carr, Paterno and Tressel) and letting teams with lesser talent bring a game down to execution on the last drive or two in the fourth quarter are all gone from the conference and Kurt is just about the last remaining bridge to that bygone era of Big Ten football. Without O'Keefe's genius in running the 2 minute offense (LSU, MSU 2009, Pitt 2011, etc.), sadly, I suspect games like Saturday's will become the norm.

The money thing is an issue and many in the media down play it all the time.

College coaches cash in

Per that data, based on total income, KF is the 4th highest paid coaches in college football. Everyone above him has won national championships. Your telling me, that much like JVB, KF is our best option?

If Kirk is a man of such high morals and standards he should take a pay decrease like Smith did for the 49ers due to lack of production and not meeting expectations. Say he gets 2 mil a year, that is 2 mil the University could "donate" to charities and such because i doubt the Ferentz family donates that much. I am no longer a koolaid drinker sorry, will support the Hawks like Fro said but no longer am I "in Ferentz do I trust" bandwagon kinda guy.

You're right the Ferentz family hasn't done anything for the University or the people of Iowa.

i'm curious to hear some names you have. anyone have an opinion on BF being next head coach? just curious who people have as possible replacements

So you don't blame the coaching staff for the attrition? My opinion that's whats hurting this team the most. Young players and a below average 5 year QB. Do we still not have a dedicated QB coach on staff? Why not? When players started leaving the BBall program or threatening to leave Iowa made a change. You have to place the majorty of the players leaving on the coaching staff.

I'll say it I think Bob Stoops wants to retire having the chance to coach the Hawks. From the comments he has made to the media and the things I've heard.

With the kind of money Iowa is paying now who couldn't you get to come here?

They downplay it with good reason. Part of what his pay is now is a reward for what he has done in the past. It took him awhile to get there. Yet Brady Hoke isn't far behind and if you look at his career, he has three winning seasons in the eight years before being hired at UM. Look at what they were paying Petrino and how many conference titles did he win at Arkansas? How many BCS bowls? There are like 50 guys on that list and if the pay were based strictly on national titles and conference titles, 95% of the guys in that list should make less than $900k a year.

+1. To those who want me to come up with a list of names - I think Stoops should be the first guy we call if/when KF leaves, retires, is fired, etc. That would be a good start. Guy with Hawkeye roots, loves the state, would certainly make great $$$ at Iowa too.. Unrealistic? Maybe he wouldn't come, but I'm not so quick to write it off.

I'd have to research to come up with more names, but with the salary Iowa can afford to pay, I should think we could entice somebody. I'm not saying Nick Saban or someone, so don't be putting words in my mouth. But maybe someone up & coming who is winning big a non-BCS conference and is yet to get their big pay day (like an Urban Meyer while he was still at Utah, etc.) is worth a look. I'm not an athletic director and it's not my job to find & hire the right coach, but I have to believe it can be done.

And I'm not saying Steve Spurrier, but I'm guessing alot of people would never guessed that he would have gone to a smaller school like S. Carolina who lacked tradition - but he did. What was Gamecock football before Spurrier went there? I just don't see why Iowa couldn't snag a good coach who is available if/when the timing is right.

And for those who want me to give a list - what is YOUR list of names that you think would coach at Iowa? Besides Brian Ferentz.

I would say someone like Mike Leach if given the chance would like to bring his style to the Big Ten. Great opportunity to get back in to the spotlight. And I don't think it would take much to get him out of Pullman. Flame away haters

I'm a loyalty guy. Heck, I wanted to give Lick another year and we all know how big a disaster that would've been. So I don't really trust my judgement when it comes to this kinda thing. So, in this thread, (ITT) convince me of your point of view.
Either, KF needs to go, or, KF deserves our support so I can make up my own mind. Go!

A point of view is not necessary and had no influence on reality in this situation.

This is such a great question from the OP because you can make such strong cases either way.

For keeping KF:
He lead Iowa to its biggest bowl win in 50 years.
Since he built the program up Iowa's worst season have been 6 win seasons.
4 double digit win, top 10 finish seasons.
He may hit 100 wins this year. Only Fry has done that at Iowa.
IC is in the middle of nowhere. The only fun thing there to do is drink. Its lily white and conservative. Put another way, its damn hard to recruit there. Hell even CR kids go out of state a lot.
Iowa hasn't won an outright B10 title in almost 30 YEARS (1985). What do fans expect?

For showing KF the door:
Outside of 2003 & 2004 have any of Kirk's teams over-achieved? Nobody was expecting 2002 but it turned out Iowa has better players than every team it faced outside of USC. They should have been 12-0 going into that game.
2008 is viewed as a great team but with all 11 guys on the 1st string defense making it to an NFL roster at some point, a Doak Walker RB, NFL QB, great OL and you go 9-4??? Way under-achieved.
2009, Iowa had better players than every team they beat and lost to a team with inferior talent.
2010 was the biggest disaster I've ever seen in the Iowa program (yes worse than 1997, not even close)
Kirk is only 10 games above .500 in his B10 career. Not good enough for his pay grade.
Off the field issues are significant, players leaving, and his RBs appear to have some sort of strange curse.
His teams have a difficult time doing simple things like cover onside kicks and managing the clock.
He has the personality of an old sock.
On two separate occasions he has started the 2nd best QB on the team for a lengthy period of time (2001 for an entire season). No excuse for that.

I can't decide myself. As i said, you can make incredible cases for both sides.

One more thing. There is no way in hell Kirk is going anywhere until he wants to.

Maybe Ferentz will fire Ferentz? He may just do a self-evaluation and kick himself out based on under-performing in all rating categories.

By the way, it appears he is not having fun in this job. Eerily similar to a Lickliter-type 'affect.'

Xerxes has a great post!

Your right with pretty much every thing especially that last statement. For me what it comes down to is not wanting mediocrity. That is what I feel like Iowa fans a settling for.

KF King Meh-dis the King with the Meh touch.
