The following was posted by the editor of the Toledo Chronicle:

"HE PROMISED - According to all web info. Don Nelson is, at this writing, just seven games away from becoming the winningest coach in NBA history. I hope the Golden State Warriors win seven games. THEN (even if they don't) the time has come for Nellie to fulfill his promise to someday coach his alma mater. He is 69 years old- do just a five-year contract to start with - then, likley enjoy more success in Iowa City. The finest replacement for Lick is a true Hawkeye. Don Nelson for coach! - J. Speer"

Could you imagine Don Nelson coming back to Iowa?

Maybe they'd finally retire his jersey...

I made a post asking about why it wasn't retired earlier this season and got zero response. Does anyone know why this hasn't happened? Is there some kind of schism between him and the school?

He's without a doubt the most influencial Iowa BBall alum ever.... and maybe the most influencial alum period. Guys done some amazing stuff.

As I stated in an earlier thread, his son(Donn Nelson, Jr.) would be a better fit than he would. Hiring Nellie or junior would bring entertaining basketball, but defense wouldn't be a high priority. Equivalent of hiring Paul Westhead.

If you are going to think outside the box and grab an NBA guy I would talk to Scott Skiles.

I have never talked to Nels about his past with Iowa, but the lack of respect in not retiring his number has to come from some where. I don't see how it can just be an oversight.

I would much much rather hire Don Nelson than any mid major or assistant coach. We need a big name who is gonna bring in players, some exciting basketball, and get this program back on track. If we hire an assistant w/ no head coaching experience that is a huge risk, and we saw how the last mid major coach did at Iowa.

I think we should start a retire Don Nelsons number thread and see how big it gets... gggoooooooooooooooooo Nellie..
