Its the receivers stupid!

Wisconsin has a very very good defense. If Iowa had some decent receivers they could have moved the ball and showed a more dynamic attack. This team is playing one handed. Only teams with bad pass defense will allow Iowa to have a decent game passing. Still, even with pretty good WR corps, Iowa probably would only score no more than 21 today.

Let's keep the perspective here.

Defense played hard and hung in there in the 2nd half when it would have been easy to sort of laydown. Wiscy's last drive was really the culmination of Iowa's D getting understandably tired. Look at the time of possession. Its a wonder that wisky didn't score a lot more points in the 4th quarter.

Iowa could win 3 of the next four. I'd be very happy with that. If they only win 1 of the next for I will be disapoint.

1-3 with the win being a nail biter in Champaign.

We will win three of the four. Other than Michigan, none of the other defenses are even close to what Wisconsin puts out there. Render had some issues today, but for the most part...they did well against a top flight defense.

I agree that Iowa doesn't have the best receivers, but it is not all on them. I have seen far lesser talent be able to get open and generate offense , usually against Iowa. The problem is that GD still seems to think he is calling plays with TX level talent and these guys can't do that

Disagree with the receivers being bad. Not too hard to cover when they all only go five yards deep. At one point two receivers on the left went out about three yards and did nothing....right next to each other, Beatherd threw it away to the right to the TE covered by three DBs. It is the schemes, GD sucks.

So let me get this right....Iowa's receivers aren't all that bad because other receivers have success getting open against our defensive backs. Gotcha!

Penn State's Defense looked pretty dang good, and we ain't OSU on offense. If we go 2-2 I'd be surprised.

Bingo. We have adequate talent, what we don't have is an OC that has a clue.

Yeah...I think we win three of the four. I did think the OL played decent against that defense. Remember Beigel played yesterday too...he didnt' against OSU. Wisconsin played in OSU's backfield and Barrett was running for his life most of the time...he's just got better receivers than we do and he runs better than Beathard...which is the gist of this thread. CJ wasn't running for his life, we just didn't have many people running open either...or pressing wisky deep. Don't fault the OL for that play calling...not going for the fourth and one in a crucial drive on their side of the field...etc. You've gotten a yard with QB sneaks all season...and you run an inside zone into a ten man line...on another third and one. Stupid. We weren't getting our backs hit in the backfield...we just have an anemic core of receivers right now...and Davis can't scheme them open.

We are not the biggest or the fastest, but our routes suck. No back shoulder throws, no timing patterns where the ball is thrown before the cut to the area the player will be. Its practice and execution. Other college and pro teams do this. We pay these coaches way to much to just have receivers go ten yards, turn around, and wave there arms like gym class in 7th grade.

You seriously think Iowa has adequate speed on offense or defense? That's what stood out about that game. Wisky comes off the line on both sides at a much higher rate. Iowa's receivers are not talented. They have one that would be a decent role player. Other than that the injured tight end is the only real receiver. On defense we complain that the safeties are terrible. Maybe they are but when the LBs are low quality on speed the safeties have to cover weaknesses.

It is a speed issue that comes some from recruiting Iowa, SD, and Nebby small high school players as one of the main sources of players.

Wisky was like watching Iowa's scheme with much better players. Wisky is better this year than Iowa was last year. Iowa did come of the defensive line last year at a faster rate though (drop off on line quickness). I wasn't old, but I was old enough to know that is what I saw from Iowa in the mid 70s. We are at mid 70s level with a few really good players and we aren't running high school schemes like then.

This program is in serious trouble and removing the OC is like putting a new band aid on cancer. We will stop getting the King's of the world. Wadley is so far and away the most athletic offensive player it's not close and he is actually here quite accidentally and a huge risk at the time. It worked out. Take away King and Wadley and this team maybe close to winless.

Iowa got pushed around by NDSU for crying out loud. We now know that wasn't a fluke. NDSU is not what we thought they were. No doubt good, but not a world beater.

We had 230 total yards, I wouldn't say anyone on our offense played decent

Adequate for 10+ wins and win B1G or make the CFP, or hang with the top teams, no I do not. Adequate to be 7-1 so this year and at least 8-4 overall... Yep.

Talent couod/should be better at a few spots, no argument. Ability to put the pieces we do have in a position to win should be miles better, more so on offense than defense.

Wisky's scheme is similar to Iowa's in philosophy only...the plays and routes they run are what I wish we woud.

7 wins only because of a very weak schedule. Miami and Clowns are just bad. NDSU could have won and been worse as was N W. Iowa has some very good players. Jewel would be good in a complete team. Cj would be OK on many teams. The receivers are among the worst. Wadley is watched like a Hawk would its prey. The line on both sides is very slow.

Purdue is really bad. PSU has a lot of issues. OSU isb t world beating. Goofs are about like Iowa.

Iowa ,is a lot closer to a disaster than thought. The talent in next few years will rival the mud 70.
