It's really very simple

Does Iowa piss the bed against the Big Dogs because KF is a mediocre game day coach? Answer: No The #1 reason is because he has never placed a premium on recruiting....period! We get run in every Rose Bowl by faster athletes, and every time we face the likes of an Ohio State. We got beat to the edges on both sides of the ball, and run by a 2 loss USC in 2002 when we assumed that we had become a Big Dog. We clearly hadn't, which is sad considering that was the most athletic team Iowa has ever had. All that athletic talent, and USC STILL made us look silly. You can have coaching lapses when you recruit....talent can cover up warts,,,,,but you can't contend for National Championships by having to overachieve 15 straight games. KF will always treat non-conference games like it's NFL Pre-Season, and not lose much sleep over losses until it's conference play....not sure he loses much sleep there either, because he knows that he will never be held to the standards of the coaches at "Real" programs and be expected to contend for National Championships. "That can't or shouldn't be expected at Iowa" you say.....ok, then quit paying him like he is being expected to do that.

You're right it is simple. ..we have the speed...we just leave them on the bench...honestly. ..can you tell me if we lined up Scheel Smith Young and Nash on one side and left Vandy alone on the other and ran deep go and quick slant routes ...any one could cover that?..not often

Scheel and Smith were in the game at the same time quite a bit on Saturday. Apparently they were not getting open because the ball rarely went their way. Could also be due to the fact that QB was under pressure many of the times that they did throw.

I prefer to take the optimistic approach to the rest of the season, but I am concerned about the receiver position outside of Vandy, as well as the ability to protect QB in obvious passing situations. The latter seems like it has been a concern for the last 3 years (if not more).

Those guys might be fast by Iowa standards, but that doesn't mean they're fast.

My take is that we currently recruit "BIG bodies" that give us the best chance of playing smash mouth football in October and November when the weather and temp starts to change late in conference play. I honestly don't think speed is our priority on the recruiting trail because they have no intention of looking for the deep or homerun plays late in the season.

I think OSU and Michigan don't necessarily have that problem because they more or less bring in whoever they want year in and year out based on their brand. I think that while we mold/develop players very well I'm not convinced that they are always the players that we initially target and therefore we find players that fit the mold that KF feels could be best suited to win in late October or November, to maybe compete for a conference championship, as opposed to a January bowl game or possible National Championship..

I don't know if it's really that they're not getting open, or our scheme only allows our QB to make one read. The pressure CJ has been under has also contributed to passing woes. Every year we seem to have 1 WR that gets 80% of the catches, and the others are just out there running sprints

Smith has stone hands, and Scheel should be given more opportunities to play. Don't expect to see Young or Nash play much during the Big10 season. KF shuts that down

Well heck, if speed is the ultimate determinant, let's just go raid the track team for the fastest guys. Or heck, why doesn't an NFL team offer Usain Bolt $100M contract.

There's a heckuva lot more to playing WR than just being fast.

Sure you'e right but I was speaking from a scheme point of view .. the mismatches create space and a bit of confusion at times for a LB whos has to cover a WR.. then drag routes open up and as a result, teams cant drop more in the box, and by rolling way from the blitz it allows for quick hits & down and outs. Its about keeping a D on their heels. If a Lb has to sprint out to cover a 15 yard sideline slant 2-3 times his first step wont be a mad rush to the LOS...now he has to read, process then react ...not just explode up the gut and tee off....granted its not much time difference but football is a game of inches and seconds.

Have to agree with the OP. Don't expect to beat the Bid Dogs. Just want to make sure we beat the 'little' ones tho!

Given KF's approach and philosophy you need to be a good game manager and he simply isn't. We can all agree KF supporters and detractors that it isn't one of his strong suits. He is not alone there are plenty of guys in college and pro that are on that list......maybe KF happened to stumble on the right gig. I don't know.

The weaknesses on this years' team are too weak to be overcome by Bethards and Jewels.

Weaknesses at both D. Ends and Wide Side Linebacker plus inexperience at Safety.

Offensive line isn't deep and all hopes are on Daniels and Welshs to be healthy.

Therefore, I have concluded this team is a 4-8 to 6-6 team.

you heard it hear first folx

LOL!!! How do you roll away from the blitz? Do you ask the defense where they are blitzing from and then call an audible? LOL.....Yeah, you know a LOT about schemes, lol. Tell us more about your 'schemes', lol. You folks are simply hilarious!!! YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE ABOUT MAJOR COLLEGE FOOTBALL SCHEMES AND HOW TO GAME PLAN TO BEAT DIFFERENT COVERAGES....
