It's ok to say Ferentz needs to go...

And still appreciate what he has done for the program in the past. I don't think it's a good idea to stay in any position for too long, not matter what line of work you are in.

A fresh start would not only be good for the program which has hit a plateau. I also think it would be good for KF to move on to a new challenge. Although there are over 3 million reasons why he'd probably never choose to do that.

I get why some people defend him for what he has accomplished, but sometimes change is needed if you want to take the next step. You should be able to say that without it being blasphemous.

I sure hope you don't run a business with this mentality.

I actually do run a successful business, thanks. Part of running a successful business is knowing when changes are needed. KF obviously doesn't believe in this philosophy, therefore we continue to lose games in the same fashion we lost them six years ago.

So you think Iowa should fire Kirk Ferentz, and buyout the 9 years left on his contract? I suspect the buyout would be at least 15-20 million dollars. That is your suggestion as a businessman to our Athletic Department?

I don't believe the OP said anything about firing Ferentz. He said that maybe Ferentz should consider himself moving on to other things. I can assume the OP meant like the NFL.

Would griping on this board about Iowa's loss to Minny be sufficient?

Tom Davis agrees. The question with that next step is it up or down?

Baldies knows nothing about running a business. The average CEO tenure in corporations is less than 5 years. People move in and out of jobs at that level. We may have reached a point where we have plateaued. The same thing happened with Florida St. under Bowden although he actually won more frequently back in his prime than KF. It could also be said for Hayden in the 90's. Iowa was a much better team through the 80's than the mid-late 90's

When someone says that a coach ''needs'' to go, I somehow doubt that this suggestion is inspired by that someone truly being concerned for the welfare of that coach, and not the program.

It is simply a nice way of saying that Iowa ''needs'' to fire Ferentz.
KF just signed an extension, his son is a junior lineman on the team, and suddenly, for his own peace of mind,he ''needs'' to quit? Right.

It's not blasphemous, it's just not realistic.

Unless you can name a realistic option for his replacement as well as why said replacement will do better than Kirk has done (when he has done as well or better than anybody Iowa has ever had) then you're not really making much of an argument.

It's also terribly unrealistic to think that somebody like Gary Barta would stake his reputation on forcing a change, two years after a BCS win. I'm pretty sure nobody wants to be known as the guy that pushed Kirk Ferentz out the door. Based on the history of Iowa football, the chances that such a move is for the better are probably not very good either.

Added to that, you can also count on the national media crucifying Iowa for making such an arrogant decision. There is no way for Iowa to come out looking good in that scenario.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen, or that it couldn't work out for the best. What I am saying is that it's not likely to happen, and even if it did, I certainly couldn't expect it to be an improvement over Kirk Ferentz.

Rodthompson, You need to get your name correct when you post. Are you sure your not Garythompson, because you have to be a cyclone with your logic, or you better have his bankroll if you're serious about getting rid of KF.

you RUN a business, but don't think its smart to stay in one position for too long? planning to get out of the business soon then?

For a FB coach, I agree 100%.

In Kirk's case its not as easy for me to say. He is the best kind of person and I want him to stay but it might be better for him to get out, take a year off, charge the batteries, and try a different school.

I truely believe he has topped out the Iowa program. Winning 2 B10 championships and 1 BCS bowl in a decade is about the best Iowa can hope for.

Problem is your NOT going to get anyone better than Ferentz to coach this program boys and girls. Get real IOWA is NOT a destination job but for those select few and the best one of that bunch aint never coming Bob Stoops.

4 million a year with some of the best facilities in the country isn't considered a destination job? Oh my bad I forgot that we're just lil ole Iowa. Yeah definitely not a destination job.

Why would Stoops come to Iowa after what he's done at Oklahoma. Maybe Tony La Russa should come back and manage the Iowa Cubs. Iowa wins Coach Ferentz is the "almighty" and if Iowa looses its throw him under the bus. Alway the same poor loosers. You can't change KF coaching style, as much as we'd love to see him light a fire under some of his coaches and players A**'s once in awhile, it ain't happnin' -- (As Steve Deace would say) - KF gets the most out of the players he gets to coach. Iowa is very lucky to have him. What frustrates me the most is the answer this state has to athletic programs to turn them around, and that is to just fire the coach and get a new one. Iowa State has been plagued with this syndrome for years in its football and basketball programs. How many of you dads out there struggled with making good parenting decisions with your kids as they have/were growinging up. They didn't always make the best decisions or choices. Some of our children shined more then their siblings but we didn't give up on the ones struggling. We didn't fire our children or they sure didn't get rid of their parents. (I'm sure they would of liked too a few dozen times or so) --- So disgruntled Hawk fan. Grow up and understand were talking about a game here and not worrying about our children getting home safe at night. Things will turn back around. They always do.

funny how all the "weirdos" come out of the woodwork during losses....
