It's official...

Which makes the conference that much weaker....ugh
But eventually, a little bit richer....because you know, they didn't have enough money, we had to add two lower tier programs because they happen to be in big city so they could keep the lights on.

as a whole yes, but there are more people in the NE that pay attention to the big ten now. Maryland will be competitive in football and basketball

In football what team would you compare Maryland to in the B1G? As far as over all strength and quality? I would guess Middle of the pack lower end or higher bottom third. Sounds like Nothwestern, Purdue (the average Purdue team over the last ten years not Purdue of last season.) and I would say the better Maryland teams would match up well against the 6-6 Iowa teams. Years ago Maryland had a very good basketball program but I haven't heard much from them recently.

College football is ever changing. The gm will never be the same. I don't think it will be long until players start getting paid for play. I myself think that a scholarship is one hell of a payday. But kids these days don't think so.

Let the beat downs begin. Rutgers has a very lopsided record against PSU. Now they are going to have to face tOSU and Michigan every year. However, I am anxious to see a couple of new opponents in Kinnick.

Honestly, Maryland might not be all that dissimilar from Iowa. Going back to 2001, Maryland has won 8 games or more six times, including a few 10+ win seasons. Edsell has certainly had to take a few years to get things going back in the right direction after inheriting a pretty bare cupboard, but they could be pretty competitive as long as they stay healthy.

A lot of that had to do with Ralph Freidgen who was a terrific HC.....Like KF at Iowa, RF knew exactly what it took to win at Maryland. The jury is out with Edsall(sp?) Ironically, RF is currently the OC at Rutgers . Didn't know that until I looked it up 2 seconds ago.

I'm gonna agree with 3308.

Iowa = 27 bowl games

Maryland = 25 bowl games

Both program's produced their most recent bowl victory from the 2010 season.

Iowa's winning percentage as a program 53%

Maryland is 52% (53 if you use the rounding factor)

for a while there Ralph Freidgen was on the same level as KF. yeah, he had the weight issues, but he still was a hot commidity he was on everybody's list as a guy to interview for HC position.

The Big Ten failed Big Time. Maryland might be middle of the pack once in a while but they are nothing special. Rutgers is garbage. For those who are posting stats that say that they have stats that say they aren't THAT much worse than Iowa..well Iowa has been a middle of the pack team. Maryland does not make this conference better. They couldn't get Notre Dame, and I HATE Notre Dame...but there are thousands of idiot morons who love them so they would be better than a million Rutgers and Marylands. I could live with Maryland, but Rutgers is a joke. they're in a big market? Yeah, but nobody in that market actually watches them play.

Deace made some good points on this topic during a podcast.

1. $$$$$$, more eyeballs, etc.

2. B1G keeps its brand name teams and the new additions will be fodder.

3. New recruiting bases

Delaney is perhaps the most calculated commissioner. It was a brilliant move.

I wish we would've taken Mizzou over Rutgers (I realize that wasn't an option but it would've been had we accepted their overtures earlier). Maryland I'm cool with. Notre Dame doesn't want to be part of the B1G for some reason, so that conversation is a non-starter.

B1G ADs may want ND. B1G Presidents don't. End of story.

Freidgen was definitely the architect for most of that success, but Edsall is a pretty good coach IMO. He had quite a bit to replace in his first year, and they had quite a few injuries to key players last year. If they stay healthy, I won't be surprised to see them win 6-8 games this year, while playing a tougher schedule than we are (their last two months are brutal).
