Its official - Keno Fired at Prov

That was quick. Should have stayed at Drake. Serves him right.

So if tomorrow someone offered you the amount of money he was offered at Providence, you wouldn't take it? Only a fool would pass up that opportunity. He played his hand while he was hot and cashed in, yeah he got fired but he will have a nice payday from Providence.

He should have said that Providence should have never hired him.

Of course almost anyone would take the money and run. If he failed (which he did) he will still get paid millions to fail.

I'm disappointed that I was right. Three years ago after that great season with Drake ended with a buzzer-beater (Iowa fans understand the Bulldogs' pain) and he took the Providence gig, I thought it would be very tough for him in the Big East. I wish I had been wrong because I think Keno is a good coach, but I don't think he can recruit very well and on the east coast that may have been his demise. It would have been nice to still have him at Drake, he is a Missouri Valley quality of coach, I think that is the kind of conference he can have success in again, if somebody give him that chance.
Note: Drake lived on the 3 ball that year with shooters like Korver, and he had a great offensive strategy to get them open and a good heady point in Emenecker. He thrived with some of the players Mr. Davis had brought in for him.

This is the exact quote I thought I'd find in this thread. Keno can go another 6 or 7 years without a job, and be in the same financial position as if he'd stayed at Drake. I'm pretty sure he made the right decision.

Now, if after that time he doesn't have a job, you definitely got me.

What was his contract? And since he is fired does he still get the rest of the money or a buyout (provided he doesn't sign to coach another team, I would assume)?

I believe his original deal was 7 years/$7 mm and got a 1 year extension after his first season. I heard a report that Providence is buying out the final 5 years, but I haven't seen or heard a dollar amount.

Wonder if his point guard recruit from Texas may look else where? also if Sid Lowe is fired from NC state does Harris reopen his recruitment

Keno is one blessed man. He was the only son begotten to a great coach and good man, Mr. Davis Davis and his lovely wife.

He was brought up on college BB beginning with his earliest memories and childhood in Boston and the Big East to Stanford to Iowa including some really great years in the Hawkeye state..

He's smart, works hard but has "THE" connections. He took it and ran with it with Drake. Then when offered about 4x his then current salary ($250K to $1 Mil) he went with it. Who in there right mind wouldn't?

Just another case study of the way out freakin economics of the $'s to college coaches in D 1 football and men's BB.

He wasn't ready, he wasn't seasoned and he doesn't yet know how to recruit or hire big time stud asst coaches who can recruit.

Best of luck to Keno, hope he has a really wise investment advisor and decides to give back.

Many, many opportunities are ahead of Keno Davis.
