It's Fair to Say We've Hit Rock Bottom

Trust him, folks, it could be a lot worse. You young whippersnappers just don't have the proper perspective.

You don't even need to go back to the 60's and 70's (although I know a couple guys that played on Iowa teams during that time that would laugh in the face of anyone saying this is rock bottom) 1999 was rough 1-10, 0-8 in the conference.

Hell I remember being in a bar watching Iowa get beat at Indiana in 2000 and people were so excited about how great a QB Beutjer was going to be and being excited about a team that went 3-9. It's all about perspective. Look I am not going to try and tell anyone they should be happy where the team is at but I can assure you it COULD be a hell of a lot worse.

The reason why fans are so ****** right now is based on the success that KF has brought to this program over the last 14 years. No that doesn't give him a pass for losing or making horrible in game coaching decisions but for those acting like this season is the end of the world or somehow the bottom are just plain clueless.

Rock Bottom will be when we lose out and fail to score offensive TD's in our last 2 games while being beaten by 50 points. Nebrasksa should come in at like 15+point favorites and although we've had Michigan's number, I think they will beat the $hit out of us. To top it off Kirk's response to the season will be "well, that's football" then in the offseason, 6 prospective starters will get arrested, 3 others transfer and all RB's will be injured again leaving only fellow Hawkeyenation contributer BSpringsteen to line up in the backfield for the 2013 season. That will be absolute Rock Bottom.

I am good with Iowa keeping Ferentz.

He does, however, have to make changes. If not, send him packing.

He did make changes. This year we have a new offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator. You can't go much more wholesale than that. Ferentz gets this year to play the "systems changes" card (though it still shouldn't be as bad as it has been this year). Next year if the team continues to be this disfunctional, most logical folks will conclude there is only one change left to be made.

Those were changes made only because other staff quit.

On the field, Iowa is doing the SOS. Same old philosophy.
Does Iowa look or play differently on defense this year? SOS.
Offense = stretch play right, stretch play left.
Play action off stretch play. Maybe a little different as far as pass patterns etc. but basically the same stoggy old crap as we have seen for years. SOS.

I watched 10 minutes of the Northern Illinois game and realized that nothing had really changed.

So a change of offensive and defensive coordinators doesn't count as a change when they quit, only if they are fired?

this season has a VERY similar feeling to Hayden's final one. The team progressively got worse every week, I'm seeing the same thing with this team. I know ferentz is unfireable but barta sure as hell isn't. Someone needs to answer for this abomination.

If KF is unfirable then why would you blame Barta by firing him? You already said KF was unfirable? Are you blaming Barta for that and that is why you would fire him?

This is Rock Bottom...? Season is NOT over yet! HOWEVER, if we goose-egg the rest of the season then I would say we have become the WORSE TEAM in the NATION!!! The way we are playing now I am frankly SHOCKED that we won ANYTHING! Indiana was THE most pathetic display I have witnessed in a VERY long time... And that includes the CM joke... I will be at the Purdue game, but if we start STINKING like a bunch of DEAD CARP then I will be BOOOOOOING loud and long!

You really don't grasp the difference? KFz did not CHOOSE to make those changes...they were forced on him. He needs to make conscious (and committed) changes in his philosophy. The chances of that happening are very slim.

We all have strengths and weaknesses. Unfortunately Ferentz's main weaknesses are killers....he's stubborn, and slow to adapt and change. And his stubbornness is often mistaken for "strength" or "integrity".

In 2012, whether it's business, sports or whatever..you better be willing to change, adapt and adjust if you want to succeed and stay on top.

That's not in KFz's makeup.

Then be honest with yourself. You are looking for more than a change in coordinators you are looking for a change in the head coach position.

This is Ferentz's style and he is not going to change. It doesn't matter how many Offensive or Defensive Coordinators Ferentz goes through, the philosophy on the field will be the same.

Fire Barta for giving KF the contract that makes him unfireable. The chances of KF being shown the door would be much higher without the $20 million price tag.
