It’s a damn good time for Hawkeye Sports

Football team had its best 5 year stretch ever and seemingly is past the random 4 win dips.

Basketball team isn’t fading in February and we have a legit POTY in Garza.

Women are gonna make the dance.

Wrestling is the favorite to win a Natty.

Baseball is competitive, gymnastics, swimming all the ancillary sports we compete well in.

Things are going pretty well.

MBB, WBB, FB, and wrestling are a combined 38-2 at home this year and all are ranked.

Men's Track won the Big 10 last spring. Joey Woodey is a very good track coach.
I kind of wonder what Wirfs would have been able to do with the discus had he worked on it for Iowa in the spring. As a senior coming out of high school he was already better than the throwers at Iowa, then add his Marvel comic book genetics and Doyle's strength program.

Shot is where he really stood out, though Iowa's newest walkon punter was even better. Epenesa was among the top discus throwers in the nation. ISM and Moss were both elite 110H as well.

He was actually closer to the discus all time Iowa HS record than shot which is why I brought that one up. He also has way longer arms and bigger hands than just about anyone at the collegiate disc level which is a bigger part of that throw. Either way if he had Iowa’s strength program and time to work on shot or discus he’d be at the top of the NCAA pack.

He was 11th nationally in the shot his senior year. He was not in the top 25 in the disc (AJE was 10th). But yes, he could have been awesome in either of those events at the collegiate level.

Our walkon transfer punter from NDSU (Nick Phelps) had the 7th best put in the nation in 2018 (67' 2"), about a foot further than Wirfs.

ISM was somewhere around the top 40 nationally in 110H his junior year, posting a 13.97 (didn't run track as a senior).

Moss was just outside of the top 25 nationally in 110H as a senior, posting a 13.85.

Brandon Smith was a state champ in high jump. I think his PR is around 6' 8", which is good though far from elite (at a national level).

As a sophomore, Gavin WIlliams ran a 10.8 100m at Drake. Not elite, but pretty damn zippy for a biggish RB.

Sorry about further derailing this thread, but as I was looking up times, I was reminded that there is a kid who ran a sub-10 100m last year, all-time HS record. He is currently at Georgia as a freshman. Check out this terminator anchoring a 4x4 relay:

Women were the conference champs in field hockey.

Epenesa actually had better throws than Wirfs during their respective HS careers.

Yeah. much as everyone loves the individual marquee events, the most exciting event at the "big-time" meets is the usual concluding event, the 4x400 meter relay. It almost always has great finishes, including Iowa's Steven Willey running a great anchor leg to help the Hawks win the B1G conference meet in 2011.

Updated to 42-2 at home.

Wrestling beat OSU, dudes beat Penn State, and the chicks beat Penn State and Minnesota since the original post

I saw a tweet regarding attendance numbers: men's and women's BB sightly up, wrestling up 40% (set a national attendance record, I believe), football continues to decline.

Basketball will always roll with the tide of the particular year; football is getting so expensive that you're either going to see it continue to fall or prices go down (fat chance).

Wrestling dual attendance has been recorded since 2002, and Iowa has been the leader 18 out of the last 19 years and every year since 2007. Tom Brands made a semi vague comment in a press conference when asked about attendance that since wrestling viewership on BTN has skyrocketed the past few years, maybe Hawk wrestling should get a small share of the TV revenue. I can't argue with that.

If your team that has an infinitesimal budget compared to football and basketball can mostly fill Carver 8 times in a year, that's not insignificant. Like I said wrestling viewership on BTN is through the roof compared to years past, and the Hawkeyes are a big part of that.

We made it to the meet with Okie State. Thankfully they sell youth tickets and adult ticket prices are reasonable. That definitely helps. It was a Sunday night meet at 7pm which just sucked for timing. But TV drives the time. When you are # 1 they want you on TV.
