It sure looks great to see Iowa in 3rd place in standings

In '68 all Iowa had to do to clinch the out-right title was defeat last-place Michigan State at home on the last Saturday of the season. Of course the Hawks lose. Now they have to travel to West Lafayette on Tuesday to play Ohio State. Ohio State wins & goes on to the the Final Four. The Northwestern State game doesn't even come close to comparing to those two losses in four days. The Jacksonville loss, the double overtime loss to Minnesota under Lute & the list goes on & on. Of course, I remember fourteen consecutive Big Ten victories & an elite eight victory over Georgetown. I mean Iowa basketball used to be really, really good.

i absolutely agree with you about the Miller and Lute years. Heck just think what would have happened if Connie Hawkins hadnt of been railroaded out of the Hawk program. Hawkins was NBA ready.

I believe the '68 team sleepwalked through that last regular season game against Michigan. The hawks made the wrong coaching move between Miller and Olsen but that is the problem sometimes when you cant keep a coach around.

I also said that Mr. Davis didnt recruit later in his tenure. I mean I heard he hardly ever went to the Iowa Boys BBall championships.

But I also dont blame Mr. Davis for the lame non-conf schedule the last 5-6 years of his tenure. The hawks had some great non-conf games in the Drs first 5-6 years then it got lame so it is just like the lame non-conf sched in football as far as attendance.

Tom waited too long to call a time out against UNLV. What were we up in the second half 23 points? He waited until the lead was cut down to eight points before calling time out. Big MO had taken it turns so greatly that it was hard to turn UNLV back. However if Brad had caught that last lob pass under the basket we might be taking about Iowa's National Championship. The team was probably the best Iowa team I have ever seen play. I don't think Ronnie Lester and team would have stood a chance, but Lute would have kept it close.

Approximatley 17 years ago I was talking to a former Iowa Baseball player at work and back then he asked me if I knew what college team holds the record for players drafted to the NBA? I was shocked when he told me it was that team that got beat by UNLV. He said I've read it in one of the top sports magazines....... Maybe sports illustrated. I don't know if that is still true today or not but to say the least I was very surprised.

They were George Raveling recruits by the way and that was Tom Davis's first year at Iowa. George wasn't the best at in game adjustments but man could he recruit. Davis was just the opposite, good game coach but his recruiting was never at the level of Raveling's. I remember George would also sweat perversely during the game while he was coaching.

Actually, the most players on one team to play professional basketball. Not all of them were drafted or played in the NBA. Some played in Europe or in the old Continental Basketball Association.
