It sure looks great to see Iowa in 3rd place in standings

When was the last time? Was it in Alford's last or next to last year?

I would guess we have only finished 3rd or higher about 5 times going back to Lute's Final Four team.

It just goes to show I think that Fran can put together a team, can really motivate players (Fran was a top player), his recruiting I think is up a tick from what I read on this site, and the hawks were really on the cusp of greatness last year when something happened.

This year I was expecting the shoe to drop after the last two losses but it is a gutty team and some gutty coaches.

I never saw third place coming this year.

When I was in jr high and high school I saw some great Iowa teams in 63-64 and the two championship teams in '68 and '70. A great run.

Keep it up Fran et al.

Of the three teams tied for third, MSU, Purdue, and Iowa, only Iowa played Wisconsin twice. It was unfortunate that White missed the majority of the Purdue game. I believe if MSU and Purdue had to play Wisconsin twice each would have had one more loss.

I do hope Fran is not satisfied with upper division finishes. Winning a regular season conference championship is long over due. With expansion of the NCAA tournament it has become too easy to be satisfied with making the field of 68.

Field should be an asterisk *69 this year. Let Kentucky cut the nets down now, move the best 2-seed up to a 1, and add another at-large team.

I really don't see any college team beating UK.

Lute finished 2nd or better in four of his last five seasons. The other season the Hawks finished fourth & went to Indianapolis.

UK is not unbeatable.

They play in a weak conference and were taken to OT twice and had other close games.

They will cakewalk to the regional final, but I could see another top team beating them late in the tournament.

No team has gone unbeaten in almost 40 years for a reason.

Quick thread hijack to Kentucky winning it all.

I agree with shonblatt that another good team can have a very good offensive and defensive nite against kentucky to beat them. Kentucky's final 3 games should be against pretty stiff competition.

If you would have told me Iowa was gonna finish 3rd in the B1G after that debacle against UNI, I would have bet da house against it. Pretty stoked the team finished 3rd, and hopefully they can do some damage in the B1G tournament and the NCAA as well.

I'm old enough to remember Ralph & Lute. To me & others of my generation, Iowa has done nothing since.

CHA is the hole that Lute dug.

I think Tom Davis was a really good coach who would have had some better seasons if he really got the top Iowa talent to be Hawks.

Hard to argue with his record in the Dance although he probably could have also finished higher in the B1g regular season more often.

His record in the tournament isn't all that great. Sure, he didn't lose in the first round. BIG DEAL! His record after the first round was awful. After the first game, the next game was virtually a guaranteed loss. After Raveling's recruits left, Davis never seriously challenged for the Big Ten championship & played only once after the first weekend of the tournament. The definition of mediocrity is Tom Davis.

Even with the original, snake-oil salesman in Bruce Pearl, Davis couldn't recruit. Davis won nothing except first round games. When Davis came to Iowa you had to donate money to get split season tickets. When he was rightfully let go you couldn't even fill up the place. That is all you need to know about Davis. When Davis took over the program, Iowa was considered historically & in every manner a better program than Kansas.

You have to be eligible for social security to remember when Iowa was considered to be a more prestigious program than Kansas. Thank Tom Davis. I really feel sorry for the Hawk fans who think the Davis years were the glory years. I remember Ralph & Lute. I mean how many Iowa fans have seen three Big Ten champs & a Final Four appearance. But the good news is that Hawk fans have not experienced heart-breaking, gut wrenching loses that Iowa suffered under Ralph & Lute.

I know the Northwestern State loss wasn't UNLV type gut wrenching. But it was pretty bad. We had a team capable of making a deep run that year. Hell last year against Tennessee hurt pretty bad too for those that held onto hope that they could turn it around. They could have made a run too. I remember Woolridge 's senior year against Kentucky hurt too.

ISU fans seem pretty convinced they would beat Kentucky. You do realize that basketball was invented in Lames don't you?

In '68 all Iowa had to do to clinch the out-right title was defeat last-place Michigan State at home on the last Saturday of the season. Of course the Hawks lose. Now they have to travel to West Lafayette on Tuesday to play Ohio State. Ohio State wins & goes on to the the Final Four. The Northwestern State game doesn't even come close to comparing to those two losses in four days. The Jacksonville loss, the double overtime loss to Minnesota under Lute & the list goes on & on. Of course, I remember fourteen consecutive Big Ten victories & an elite eight victory over Georgetown. I mean Iowa basketball used to be really, really good.

Tom waited too long to call a time out against UNLV. What were we up in the second half 23 points? He waited until the lead was cut down to eight points before calling time out. Big MO had taken it turns so greatly that it was hard to turn UNLV back. However if Brad had caught that last lob pass under the basket we might be taking about Iowa's National Championship. The team was probably the best Iowa team I have ever seen play. I don't think Ronnie Lester and team would have stood a chance, but Lute would have kept it close.

Approximatley 17 years ago I was talking to a former Iowa Baseball player at work and back then he asked me if I knew what college team holds the record for players drafted to the NBA? I was shocked when he told me it was that team that got beat by UNLV. He said I've read it in one of the top sports magazines....... Maybe sports illustrated. I don't know if that is still true today or not but to say the least I was very surprised.

They were George Raveling recruits by the way and that was Tom Davis's first year at Iowa. George wasn't the best at in game adjustments but man could he recruit. Davis was just the opposite, good game coach but his recruiting was never at the level of Raveling's. I remember George would also sweat perversely during the game while he was coaching.

All true. And they could be this year's version of the 1991 UNLV team. But I think it may be boredom, as much as anything, that has seen them be quasi-tested a few times.

Certain teams DO match up fairly well with them, Wisconsin being one. Then again, Wisconsin probably matches up just fine with any team in the country.

I know I wouldn't want the Hawks playing them in round two, although I am sure we will get that bracket or Duke's bracket.
