ISU Recruiting Class to Date

clownz were ripping on an iowa verbal that they were on as he was 'only a 2 star' - the kid from chariton - then they get their first commit - and at the time of his commitment he was a '0 star'

:)

Furthermore, it was their FALLBACK OFFER from said recruit.

They were ripping on the kid they wanted. And then they had to offer a worse recruit (who promptly committed) when said Chariton kid chose Iowa.

Lotta Crystal Ball flips over to Arkansas for 4* Jake Heinrich overnight.

Iowa has not offered him.

His main interests are ISU, ARK, ORE.. announcing today.

And the thing is... it doesn't take a Bill Parcells to notice it. I don't claim to be a football guru. I know a lot more than the average person about football, but I know next to nothing compared a D1 coach. However, at my knowledge level I'm more than capable of noticing when something isn't working. Which means Ferentz or someone on his staff should sure as hell realize when something isn't working. They should have the know how to not only realize it, but understand what adjustments would be the most effective against the defense that they are seeing. Instead they keep doing the same thing over and over and it becomes nauseating to watch as a Hawkeye fan.

Common sense leads you to believe there is only one reason for this... pure stubbornness. Refusal to change the game plan. I personally refuse to believe they aren't intelligent enough to notice it isn't working. They wouldn't be at this level of coaching if they can't pick up on that. It's like they go into a game with the mindset that this is what we said we are going to do, this is how we prepared, this is what we practiced, so goddammit we're going to keep doing it whether or it's working or not.

I agree that what we were doing was not working but by the same token how maddening is it that we could not run the ball on one of the worst defenses and rushing defenses in the nation with 2 NFL draft picks on the O-Line and several experienced running backs? Oklahoma who was very average this past season had an RB go for like 500+ yds by himself on ISU and they were gouged by many teams in the run game this past year including FCS NDSU. Yet we could not move the line of scrimmage an inch on most running plays? UN-FREAKING-REAL.

I do not get it because what we were trying should have worked. They could not stop the run but stopped us!!!! WOW.

Iowa state was bringing their safeties and linebackers up and stacking the box. Weisman isn't a fast enough guy get through small quick holes. Iowa played right into their hand. All the offense had to do was complete a few passes over a defense that was selling out to stop the run. Hawks didn't even complete a pass to a WR until the 4th quarter. Smith about lost it on the field he was so ******. That game is by far the most frustrating one for me last year.

I am not arguing that we should not have adjusted but I am still baffled by the lack of productivity in the run game against one of the worst defenses in America. I do not care if they brought the LB's, safeties & band director into the box, we should have been able to run on them at will as did many of their opponents and we did the year before in Ames. This was a less talented ISU defense than the year before no less.

I hear this excuse about loading the box all the time. Like this is some new concept we have not seen or dealt with and this was the first time ISU has ever done this to us. Bad teams can try anything but it never works, that's why they are bad. The personnel makes the plays, not the scheme.

Agreed on the lack of creativity in the run game, but Weisman was not the right personnel that day. He was too slow to the gaps and they just filled in on him. Needed a quicker RB that day that can get to the cutback lanes. Plus it's just basic football to counteract what the other team is doing and for whatever reason that day Kirk just refused to deviate. I personally thought they'd be able to run them over regardless too but it just wasn't happening. Scherff was on one leg too. I'm just excited to see Beathard at the reigns this year. I'm thinking it'll at least be a more entertaining team to watch.

I love Mark Weisman, he was a great Hawk and did what the coaching staff asked him to do. You know when someone says something like that, there is a big BUT coming......BUT Weisman was so limited in his running style. Look at any of his good/great runs, and it is because a very big hole is opened for him. What he lacked greatly was the ability to hit a cut back lane. Defenses just flowed so hard to the play side, and Weisman could never make them pay for that hitting a cut back lane. That is what always kept defenses somewhat honest against Iowa is having a back like Young, or Greene, or Coker, or Robinson, or Weigher, or others that would make a defense pay if they flowed too hard or overshot the play. Hopefully the combo of Daniels/Canzeri/Mitchell/Wadley will cure that, and we can really keep defenses honest, or if they don't stay honest, and over pursue that we hit that with big gains on the cut back lanes.

They have been doing this for years it really doesn't matter who the DC is. The DE crashes the backside and let your linebackers run loose because there is no repercussions for over pursuing because Iowa hasn't had or utilized a RB to make them pay since 2010.

OR when someone prefaces a sentence with: "That guy could date my daughter/sister". I realize that seems like a compliment, but it isn't....it really means you are not very good at something.

Btw, I would leave Coker off that list he was a plodder as well. The stretch stuff was definitely not his strength.

I am not discounting your analysis or the others who all make good points. I also agree on Weismann's limitations in the running game. Again I just want to point out this was not Rhoads first rodeo with seeing what we do. I am supposed to be convinced that none of these defensive tactics (crash/flow) took place in the game the year before where the same zone running scheme and running back basically ground them out. They had better personnel the year before in the D-Line.

I also want to point out that I believe Bullock had the most carries in that game not Weismann and was equally, and maybe more ineffective.

Scherff was no doubt playing hurt and was less effective than normal in the run game but that accounts for a left tackle. There was an experienced center, right guard and right tackle (NFL draft pick) on that line. Again ZERO push on the line and limited running lanes.

Nothing I saw from ISU looked any different than what I have seen from them in the past from my seat in the stands. In fact we were so brutally bad in the run game that they backed the safety out of the box as the game progressed. They did not need to bring him down.

Okay, Fourth of July is gonna have ISU get a commit and then a fireworks show at the stadium. Then someone will start a thread on CyFan about some out of context quote in a throwaway postgame interview that will turn into a forty five page argument about the ANF sticker on football helmets in the eighties and how Hayden Fry somehow hurt farmers by doing a psa for the Farm Bureau.

Agreed. Iowa's inability to simply impose their will even with Scherff being at 80% is mind boggling. That ISU defense was garbage. They made that DE(name escapes me) look like JJ Watt.

ISU just added a soft verbal from a (2 star) JUCO CB that had a power 5 offer (Indiana). It's like a huge boulder rolling down hill now. Major momentum.

Marshmallow soft verbal. Here's what he said lol:

"As of right now, I'm a Cyclone,"

"I like what's going on over there. I like coach (Paul) Rhoads. I like coach Mo. They're in a big conference with big-time teams and the Big 12 Conference (has teams that) throw a lot and as a corner I like that."

"I didn't think (a commitment would come) so early," he said. "I thought it would be toward the middle or the end of the season, but nothing else was coming in. I'm still open. I'm still interested in other schools, I'm still talking to other schools. But it came across my mind to commit to Iowa State. I thought right now was the right time before the season. It takes away the distractions."

Translated: "I committed because no one else wanted me". He likes what's going on over there! Boy he must have aspirations to play for the worst defense in college football.

This. This. And this. Great post.

This is indeed a pathetic recruiting class. WORSE than most MAC schools. I think UNI's recruiting is even going better. Which begs the question, why can't Ferentz beat them???

I am beginning to like this Kamal Hardy kid, after that interview. He seems like a straight shooter. We should offer him just to see if he would take a visit, maybe send his tape to some other teams like Purdue or Kansas State to see if they would offer him.

Or NDSU. Or Illinois State. Or Drake.
