It is still early and a long time to signing day so things might change when more is known about how the season went. You have to know that there is some negative recruiting going on with any player considering ISU. The head coaching situation has to be a big factor. Will he or won't he be there after this season is over? Another factor affecting ISU recruiting is it is a Big 12 school stuck in Big Ten country. Compare the footprint of the Big Ten with the Big Twelve. It covers 11 states vs 5 for the Big 12. Of those 11 states 5 are in the top ten in population. If you are a recruit in one of those 11 states where do you want to play; against opponents you are familiar with or at a place where family can see you play? ISU is kind of in a situation where they have to wait for everyone else to build their list and then they can go after who is left. What is going to be a factor now is the 2016 admission rules for participation. Many schools are going to pass on players that won't qualify to practice or play. The pool may be bigger, but what good is it to recruit players that cannot even practice?
The one thing I have noticed is the turnover of players at ISU. They have relaxed admission requirements for many of the players in order to get better athletes, but many still do not make it because of character issues. Ames is just a hard sell. The facilities are markedly better than many places, but brick and mortar won't solve the inherent issues related to location and history. The state of Iowa really can't support two D-I power five teams. Look around our neighborhood; Missouri, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin field only one D-I football team. You cannot argue that Kansas is able to support two. Oklahoma barely is able to, but proximity to Texas helps. Illinois struggles to support two Big Ten teams because everyone views Chicagoland as open borders. ISU will keep pressing on in the face of the obstacles.
